Recap / Freelancers S2 E1 "Student Body President"

Go To

VPC has been evicted from their previous home and are desperate for money since they can't afford food. Fairview High School student William Vanderchild hires them to make a video for his student body president campaign, even though he's running unopposed. William doesn't bother hiding his malevolent intentions behind his campaign, but he offers to pay double their fee. In between filming William's video and making political buttons, VPC decides to turn on William and Zona starts an opposing campaign. Meanwhile, Devin has to learn how to free her metaphorical mind, represented by a watermelon in a cage, and Ryan becomes the School Idol.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • All Elections Are Serious Business: William takes the student body president campaign very seriously, even though he is initially running unopposed.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Devin tells William that she and Zona live in a tent on the lawn. This references the pilot, in which Devin traded their old apartment lease and furniture for a tent.
    • Devin's mind has the donuts sign from the pilot episode as well as Scoots MaGoots.
    • Micah briefly slips into a British accent when Zona gets him to say he understands her plan, which earlier was determined to be his Pinocchio Nose.
  • Cool Board: Devin starts riding a skateboard through the school when she frees her watermelon mind from its cage.
  • Cool Shades: Devin decides she has to copy someone who's cool, and picks a watermelon wearing shades.
  • Cuteness Proximity: VPC tries to stay out of politics, except for Bernie Sanders because they think he's cute.
  • Election Day Episode: VPC gets involved in Fairview High's student body election, initially by filming a video for William and then starting an opposing campaign.
  • Forehead of Doom: Devin uses super-glue on her forehead to blend in with the teenage students.
  • I Am the Noun: To free her mind melon from its metaphorical cage, Devin declares that she is the key, even though she's carrying a key right then.
  • Imagine Spot: Devin imagines a mind melon locked in a cage that she must release to regain her confidence.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Ryan says he barely knows anyone at school, then a bunch of students pass by and he greets all of them by name.
  • Lens Flare: The pitch video VPC shows to William is full of these.
  • Mistaken Age: A teacher accidentally believes that Ryan is a student and chastises him for loitering in the halls instead of being in class.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: William is sexist against Zona and Devin, only calling them "women".
  • Politicians Kiss Babies: William kisses a student's "flour baby."
  • School Idol: Ryan quickly becomes the most popular guy in school, and they make him their mascot.
  • Sleazy Politician: William hires VPC to film a Propaganda Piece for his student body president campaign, and they find he's haughty, elitist, and cheats on camera.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: In VPC's pitch video, Zona assures the viewer that they definitely did not hire a better company to make their new pitch video. William sees right through this and Owen confirms they didn't make it.
  • There Was a Door: Devin's mind melon points out that the cage was a simple deadbolt, and that she had the key in her hand, after she blows it up with a magic staff.
