Recap / Frasier S 11 E 09 Guns N Neuroses

Go To

Lilith is set up on a blind date while Niles, Daphne and Martin accidentally cause some of Frasier's belongings to get destroyed.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License – Gun Safety: Frasier is horrified to learn Martin has been keeping his gun in a shoebox under his bed instead of in proper storage. His fears are further justified when it turns out that Martin was apparently keeping it loaded and with the safety off as it fires just from Niles knocking it off the dining table. As a former police officer and army veteran Martin really ought to know better. He does mention that he thought the safety was on, but that’s not something to be anything less than completely sure about.
  • Broken Treasure: The B-plot of the episode, thanks to Niles's klutziness and, as mentioned above, Martin's sheer stupidity. Marty mentions he's had to hide evidence of similar accidents from Frasier over the years, dismissing any regret on the grounds that all of Frasier's "crap" is precious to him. He coerces Niles and Daphne into helping him by threatening to move in with them if Frasier kicks him out.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Niles's only takeaway after the banana incident? "I think the banana just went off!"
  • The Friend No One Likes: Lilith. Niles and Daphne don't want to hang around while she's there, and no-one even wants to open the door for her, an argument she's able to hear.
  • The Immodest Orgasm: After counselling from Frasier and Lilith, a married couple return to their adjoining hotel room and make up very... loudly.
  • The Klutz: Niles fails to catch the banana that Daphne gently tosses to him. His flailing knocks the box containing Martin's gun off the table causing it to go off.
  • Noodle Incident: Not surprisingly, Daphne and Niles have had previous arguments about Niles's inability to catch bananas, and the havoc that has ensued as a result.
  • Simple Solution Won't Work: Daphne asks why Frasier's resorting to the usual sitcom hijinks of mind-games with Lilith rather than just talking to her. Frasier explains they tried that when they were married.
Frasier: We were better at mind-games.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Lilith inadvertently causes the side plot to happen when her condescending nature prompts a frustrated Daphne to cancel a lunch date she had with Niles, causing her to throw a banana at Niles for him to eat, but in his struggle to catch it, he knocks over the deposit box with Martin's gun in it, causing it to go off and destroy some of Frasier's possessions.
