Recap / Frasier S 04 E 09 Dad Loves Sherry The Boys Just Whine

Go To

Frasier and Niles struggle to accept their father's new larger-than-life beau.

Tropes:

  • Armor-Piercing Response: During their fight over Sherry, and the fact that Martin was also incapable of making an effort to tolerate the women Frasier and Niles dated, in frustration Frasier rhetorically asks whether any of them has ever been involved with any woman who has succeeded in being liked by all three. Martin instantly snaps "I married your mother!" Played with, however, in that after a few seconds of awkward flailing from Frasier and Niles, Martin wearily takes it back and concedes the argument, clearly realising that bringing up the specter of their beloved dead mother just to win a fight was too low a blow.
  • Dirty Coward: Niles tries to wiggle his way out of sharing the blame for disliking Sherry and have Frasier take the fall. Too bad karma instantly kicks in when Sherry proclaims that she will be attending his banquet.
Frasier: You are a little weasel, aren't you?
Niles: A little weasel whose daddy loves him.
  • Entitled Bastard: Niles wants Frasier to help him make sure Sherry doesn't attend his banquet, after he tried to weasel his way out of sharing his dislike for Sherry. Needless to say, Frasier isn't having it.
  • Hypocrite: The argument between Martin, Frasier and Niles becomes a blow-out when Martin snaps "I guess it's too much for either of my sons to make someone I care about feel welcome!" This works to shut them up... for about five seconds, until Frasier angrily realises that Martin never at any point made an effort to make any of the women he or Niles were ever involved with feel welcome.
Niles: Ooh, Frasier, you're right! He almost got away with that!
  • Laser-Guided Karma: When Niles was about to leave Frasier to take the full blame for disliking Sherry, Sherry tells Niles that she will be attending his banquet with Martin. Niles begs Frasier for help, only for Frasier to leave him.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: Martin scolds his sons for not trying harder to like Sherry. Frasier snaps back that Martin was never welcoming towards the women his sons brought home. They eventually agree that the only woman that all three of them liked was Hester (who ironically was an even bigger case of this trope).
  • Original Position Fallacy: Niles says Frasier can take the lead in telling their father what they think of Sherry, since it's not Niles's apartment being invaded. Then Sherry brightly informs him that she's Martin's date to the awards banquet where Niles is supposed to be the guest of honor.
  • Stepford Smiler: While Martin still manages to convince the boys to play nice and cheerful around Sherry, Frasier gets a small last laugh and notes that Lillith will be staying for Thanksgiving, leaving Martin also forcing a pained smile.
