Frasier buys a chess set and soon becomes determined to defeat his father, who wins constantly.

- Chatty Hairdresser: Roz is frustrated because her stylist happily talks to his other clients but always clams up when it's her turn.
- No Sympathy: Frasier couldn’t care less about Roz not having anything to talk about at her hairdresser, until she tells him he was a woman in the past.
- Replacement Goldfish: Girl is simply Maris in whippet form. Niles doesn't even realize it.
- Series Continuity Error: Martin was previously seen playing chess in an earlier episode. Here, it's made like he has never played before.
- Smart People Play Chess: Frasier prides himself on his skill at chess and is frustrated that his father keeps beating him. Martin attributes his skill to his years of police work teaching him how to observe strategy.
- Sore Loser: Frasier is just as graceful losing at chess here as he was on Cheers. Martin also doesn't handle it well when Daphne beats him at checkers.
