Recap / Frasier S 01 E 15 You Cant Tell A Crook By His Cover

Go To

After Frasier claims he can spot a criminal in a crowd, Martin challenges him to identify the ex-con in his poker group, but things take an ugly turn when Daphne begins to date the ex-con.

Tropes:

  • Bad Guys Play Pool: Jimmy, an ex-con, takes Daphne to a pool hall called "The Topaz Room" which has a bad reputation and has previously been shut down for a shooting on the premises. Frasier and Niles worry that Daphne will be in danger there, but when they arrive they find she's completely fine and busy wiping the floor with the patrons at pool.
  • Failed Attempt at Drama: When Daphne yells at Frasier and Martin for not seeing her as a human who can decide for herself, she goes to her room, but heads in the opposite direction before going the other way. Lampshaded by Frasier:
Frasier: That would have been a very dramatic exit if only her room was down that hall.
  • Hustling the Mark: By the time Frasier and Niles arrive at the Topaz Room, Daphne has sent Jimmy packing and is hustling the regular pool players.
Les: All you have to do to win the game is pot those five balls. So what do you say we double our bet?
Daphne: Oh, I might as well. I never really have understood this game. [lines up her shot] Never understood it, when I started playing with me older brothers, at the age of six. [sinks the first ball] And I never understood it during all my formative years, spent mostly in the pool halls of Manchester. [another ball sunk] Playing in local competitions and club tournaments...[another shot] winning cup after cup after cup [another] ... until our poor dad had to convert the pantry into a trophy room. [another] And I can't really claim to understand it — eight ball in far corner — even today. [sinks the eight ball] But I certainly do enjoy it.
  • Situational Sexuality: Frasier takes Linda's comment about Daphne's looks as a sign that she's the ex-con and spent time in a women's prison where she developed this trope. Martin calls him out on being a jackass, and it eventually turns out he was wrong about Linda.
