Recap / Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends S 3 E 9 Land Of The Flea

Go To

The ninth episode of the third season of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.

Eduardo gets infested with fleas from Chewy and refuses to have them removed despite them making him itch. Frankie and Mr. Herriman try various means of tricking him into getting treatment for the fleas but none of them work. Bloo, who thinks that the fleas are cool, steals all of Eduardo's fur and wears it as a robe, but then the fleas attack him for the damage he caused to their homes, revealing to everyone that the fleas are actually imaginary friends. Frankie and Mr. Herriman decide to have all the furry imaginary friends shave their fur and put it all into one room for the fleas to live in, which no one can ever go into again.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Wilt. After Bloo shaves Eduardo's fur off to make a robe, Eduardo feels embarrassed for being "naked". Wilt tries to assure Eduardo that it's nothing to be ashamed of, since he (Wilt) walks around in nothing but shoes and socks all the time.
  • Cassandra Truth: When Bloo tells Frankie and Mr. Herriman that the fleas are trying to burn him, they don't believe him, saying that fleas are just insects who have no idea that he exists and even if they did know he existed, they wouldn't be able to start a fire. The fleas then jump onto Herriman, showing everyone that they're imaginary.
  • Cold Turkeys Are Everywhere: Eduardo has a family of imaginary fleas living in his fur, and he's trying not to scratch. But everywhere he looks, there are people using scratch-and-sniff cards, monkeys scratching themselves in an inappropriate manner, etc..
  • Continuity Nod: In The Stinger, Bloo is tempted to open the door to the room that houses the fleas, similar to "The Trouble With Scribbles", when he was tempted to open the secret door to the room that housed the Scribbles. Bloo even chants "Secret door, secret door, SECRET DOOR!" as he does this, confirming the continuity.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When Mac tells Bloo that even if he did imagine fleas for him (which he won't), he couldn't keep them because he doesn't have fur. As he goes to bed, Bloo remembers Mac telling him "Fleas need fur, duh!" and hears it over and over again, which gives him the idea to shave Eduardo's fur so he can make a robe from it.
  • Flea Episode: In this episode, Eduardo befriends a swarm of imaginary fleas and protects them from Frankie and Mr. Herriman.
  • Friend to All Living Things: This episode has Eduardo making friends with and becoming very protective of a large swarm of fleas that infest his fur.
  • Fun with Homophones: This exchange when Bloo wants Eduardo's fleas:
    Bloo: Come on, just one?
Eduardo: No! Especially not Juan! He is my favorite!
  • Inconvenient Itch: Eduardo's fleas cause him to itch when they build their new homes with his fur.
  • Punny Title: This episode's title is a pun on the saying, "Land of the free".
  • Shout-Out: One of the fleas on Eduardo's fur resembles and sounds like the Mayor of Townsville. Eduardo's voice actor, Tom Kenny, was also the voice of the Mayor.
  • Smelly Feet Gag: One of the scratch and sniff cards an imaginary friend that Eduardo comes across when he tries not to think about scratching scratches smells like feet.
  • Stop Hitting Yourself: Towards the end of this episode, the imaginary fleas that live on Eduardo jump onto Mr. Herriman and take control of his body, which includes making him hit himself. When they tell Frankie and the other imaginary friends that if they don't stop trying to kill them with powders, collars, and baths, they will destroy Mr. Herriman, or at least make him keep hitting himself.
  • Why We Can't Have Nice Things: When Bloo gets jealous over Eduardo for having fleas, he asks Mac to imagine some fleas for him, but Mac refuses, saying that if he imagined a new friend for him every time he asked, Foster's would be crazy overpopulated. Bloo then remarks "You just don't want me to have nice things!"
