Recap / Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends S3E4 "Duchess of Wails"

Go To

The day they never thought would come has come: Duchess has been adopted!! However, the family that adopted her turns out to be Mac's neighbors and her complaining gets to be too much for Mac's mother to handle. Terrence tells Mac that she is thinking about moving to Singapore and he and Bloo must find a way to get Duchess out of there before the moving process begins.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Artistic License – Geography: Close but no cigar, Mac: counter to his statement, Singapore isn't in Malaysia, it is an independent county off of one of Malaysia's coasts. At least he's far closer than Terrence and Bloo, who both think Singapore is in Wisconsin.note
  • Battle in the Rain: Spoofed when Mac and Bloo try to get Duchess back into the house.
  • Bittersweet Ending: More on the bitter side. Mac and Bloo get their wish for Dutchess to be taken back to Foster's (to ensure Mac doesn't leave or Bloo gets adopted) but in return they have to be the new manservants to Dutchess much to their dismay.
  • Bookends: The episode begins and ends with Duchess treating people like her butlers.
  • Chekhov's Classroom: When Mac and Bloo ask Mr. Herriman why does everyone put up with Duchess, he presents the boys the Foster motto that mentions that any friend that enters through the doors will be cared for. Which is what Bloo remembers and uses when he comes up with the plan to bring Duchess back to Foster's.
  • Collective Death Glare: After the battle ends and Mac explains the situation, the army of friends - who were lied to by Terrence (see Karma Houdini below) shoots daggers at Terrence for his nasty trick, and he nervously smilies and promptly bolts it.
  • Entitled Bastard: Duchess' morning routine provides a perfect example, to the point where she expects Frankie to open her eyes for her. She believes the entire world has to bend to her whim as a "masterpiece".
  • Idiot Ball:
    • Mac holds this when he believes his brother's lies about their mom moving to Singapore, even though he knows that Terrence is stupid and probably shouldn't be trusted with info.
    • EVERYONE at Foster's holds this for trusting Terrence, someone that they should know not to trust.
  • Insult Backfire: Duchess keeps on trying to insult the Applebees, but they all assume that her crass remarks and sarcastic comments are supposed to be jokes.
  • Karma Houdini: Compared to the pilot where at least Terrence got punished for his actions (we're not counting Duchess being forced to live at Foster's as a "punishment") both of our villains get away with it.
    • Duchess acts like a major brat, loudly and incessantly complaining and keeping everyone at Mac's apartment up all night, and yet she gets no comeuppance. In fact, the ending shows she gets Mac and Bloo and her servants.
    • Terrence goes to the house to tell them that Mac and Bloo are bringing Duchess to the house, not mentioning why (that she was adopted by Mac's neighbors, and their mom wants to move to get away from her nonstop whining), just so he can watch the ensuing LOTR-inspired battle with relish and gets away with it, with the closest thing to comeuppance he gets is being forced to run away after Mac explains their reasons and the Foster's residents glare at him angrily.
  • Lazy Bum: Duchess shows to think of herself so highly that she rather have other people carry her, settle her alarm clock, open her eyes and feed her.
  • Noodle Incident: The beginning of the episode has Duchess angrily fling off a dress Madame Foster made for her and declare that she'd rather go naked. Madame Foster begs Duchess not to go through with it, one of her exclamations being "Not again", which implies that Duchess chose to go naked out of contempt for a dress not made to her liking before.
  • Not So Above It All: Mr. Herriman is the first character to announce/celebrate Duchess's adoption. He even had an emergency Surprise Party prepared for the occasion.
  • Shout-Out: The Foster's residents' battle to prevent Duchess from coming back is clearly based on the Battle of Helm's Deep.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: When Mac's mom tells him they're moving Terrence tells him they're going to Singapore, which Terrence says is all the way in Wisconsin. Cut to Bloo asking Mac, "So you're saying Singapore is not in Wisconsin?"
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Instead of being an outright jerkass, Bloo seemed to settled back into his pilot to Season 1 level of personality for this episode, where's he's more friendly and clever.
