Cade finds himself trying to restart the revolution in a Vichy Earth After the End. But all is not as it seems...

Tropes:

  • After Action Patch Up: Downplayed. No bandages as the torture was mental, but after escaping Cade admits to feeling "like I've been hit by a cement truck." He tries some home-brewed remedy of Eddie's, does a Spit Take when he tastes it, finally plumping for aspirin and a nap.
  • Electric Torture: Played with. The torture takes the form of Mind Rape, but there's definitely an electrical component. The trope page's "But that could kill him!" scenario is played straight in terms of potential brain damage. Then, of course, there's the execution machine used on "disloyal" humans in the simulation.
  • For the Evulz: Cade is put in the nightmare simulation to trick him into giving up the Nostradamus Book, which he does. But even after this, Cain keeps him in the simulation just so he can subject him to the Cruel and Unusual Death used on "disloyal" humans in the imaginary Crapsack World.
  • Internal Reveal: Cade and Eddie find out that Cain is in Joshua's former husk. This is revealed when Cade is lured into a trap and taken prisoner.
  • Mind Rape: Cade is a prisoner, being subjected to a simulation of a Bad Future where the Second Wave has already happened, to try and trick him into giving up the location of the Nostradamus Book.
  • Properly Paranoid: Cade gives up the book's location and the Gua find it, but Eddie has already swapped the book for a fake. Cade was also wearing a hidden bug/ tracker that allowed Eddie to find him.
