Recap / Final Space S 2 E 8 The Remembered

Go To

The Crimson Light finds themselves three years into the past where they try to use the opportunity to retrieve a dimensional key from the Lord Commander.

Tropes

  • Amnesiac Hero: While Avocato is saved from his death, he loses his memories of everything that had transpired before that point.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Time Swap Sammy tells the Team Squad "no disturbing, no killing, no romancing, no tipping". Fox is quite taken aback by that last one, calling it savage.
  • Back from the Dead: Through time travel, Avocato is saved after performing his Heroic Sacrifice back in season 1.
  • Bishie Sparkle: Little Cato flashes the "eyebrows of everything" to ensure his father from the past recognizes him.
  • Continuity Nod: When the team finds itself cornered by the Lord Commander's forces, Little Cato suggests they jump for the catwalk below. Gary, remembering how bad that went when he did just that in "Chapter 2", warns him against it. Little Cato ignores him, but like in Chapter 2, they miss the catwalk and land on top of the Dewinter's car.
  • Mirror Match: Present-day Little Cato versus past Little Cato.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: After Little Cato tells Avocato that the Lord Commander will kill him in the future, Avocato helps them steal the Dimensional Key.
  • Mugged for Disguise: The Team Squad does this to two soldiers that enter the secret elevator they were using to reach the Lord Commander's treasure house.
  • Open Secret: Clarence claims only he knows about the double secret elevator to the Lord Commander's treasure house, since he saw the blueprints. He is Instantly Proven Wrong when first Fraskenhaur, and then two soldiers also enter the elevator.
Gary: Geez, Clarence. You know, for a top-secret elevator, everyone seems to know about it.
  • Slow Doors: When Gary takes the Dimensional Key from it's vault, he triggers an alarm and the vault begins to close again, but so slow that Gary can easily leave. He lampshades the trope:
Gary: Oh, thank God for slow doors.
  • The Slow Path: How Gary gets back to the present after saving Avocato, since someone has to stay in the past to take Avocato's place there. Good thing for him it was only a few months.
  • Something Only They Would Say: After Little Cato tells Avocato he is his son from the future, he manages to convince him by showing him the Eyebrows of Everything.
  • Stable Time Loop:
    • Gary releases past Mooncake to find his past self.
    • While in Lord Commander's prison the group is caught by the living Melanie DeWinter, who is shocked to see her long-lost father (that Gary is wearing the skin of as a disguise). However, when Melanie starts ripping off the skin and sees Gary she is utterly terrified and has a fatal heart attack. Her body is then dropped into a dumpster by Clarence so his past self can find it and pick it up.
    • After saving Avocato from the moment the bomb killed him, Gary inadvertently allows the Lord Commander to escape and continue his conquest.
  • Talking Is a Free Action: Subverted. While Gary talks about killing the Lord Commander, he has time enough to escape.
  • Time Police: Time Swap Sammy, who warns the protagonists not to change anything in the past, and stops them when they try to return to the present with a dimensional key they obtained in the past.
  • Timey-Wimey Ball: Time Swap Sammy already knows Gary since from his perspective they have met several times before, but for Gary this is the first time. Gary is naturally quite confused by the explanation.
  • Tricked Out Time: When Sammy agrees to let the crew use time travel to save Avocato he does it like this to make sure time doesn't notice his absence. The crew has to recover him immediately after he was blown out into space so nobody will notice he was rescued, and someone has to stay behind to take his place in the past to make extra sure time balances out properly.
  • Wham Episode: Oh boy...
    • Due to time travel, Avocato is saved...but at the cost of all his memories.
    • Gary stays in the past because in order to save someone in the past, someone has to take that person's place, but is picked up by everyone a few months later.
  • Wham Line:
    Gary: Do you remember...anything?
    Avocato: No.
