Recap / Final Space S 2 E 5 The Notorious Mrs Goodspeed

Go To

Gary rescues his mother, a notorious criminal, from execution after considering eliminating her, and tries to reconnect with her. Meanwhile, losing Gary's attention, Mooncake starts eating uncontrollably.

Tropes:

  • Alien Blood: The prison guards are shown to have a deep purpley-blue blood.
  • Big Eater: Mooncake starts gorging on HUE's pancakes after Gary starts spending more time with his mother. In fact, he starts eating stuff that isn't food and becomes a big green ball.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Sheryl gives off a cool, friendly nature, but also emotionally manipulated her own son to get what she wanted and shows no remorse.
  • The Bus Came Back: Mr. DeWinter and his two kids from season 1, chapter 2 return to extract revenge on Gary (whom they think killed their wife/mother).
  • Cardboard Prison: The supermax prison on Sorbo is not exactly living up to it's reputation. There is only 1 guard on duty at the gate, and he easily falls for the Team Squad's excuse that they are there to check all cells in the prison for Saberbats. Sheryl easily breaks out of her cuffs and kills the guards escorting her to her execution even without Gary's help, and once Gary agrees to help her, they escape from the prison in no time.
  • The Caper: The second half of the episode involves Sheryl, Gary and Clarence breaking into the Polyhedron Fortress to steal a red jewel.
  • Caper Rationalization: Subverted; Sheryl tells the Team Squad that they are pulling off the heist at the Polyhedron Fortress because the jewel they are stealing was originally stolen from the real owner, and they are getting it back. However, after the heist, it turns out she was lying and just wanted the jewel since it contained a dimensional key.
  • Continuity Nod: Among the stuff that Mooncake spits out when he stops eating is the head of Rug Yorkvain, the racer Gary stole the Nymerian Cube from in "The Toro Regatta".
  • Downer Ending: Gary loses his mom for the second time and she takes off with one of the Dimensional Keys.
  • Dragon Hoard: The vault in the Polyhedron Fortres is guarded by a Zargon Slug.
  • Eaten Alive: Played for laughs; Mooncake eats Fox alive when he and the others try to have an intervention with Mooncake to talk about his feelings. Everyone else backs up as Mooncake approaches them, scared he will eat them too. Though, Fox is actually still alive and unharmed inside Mooncake, if only covered in drool, and once everyone lets Mooncake know he is still cared for he spits Fox back out.
  • Fan Disservice: One of Clarence’s attempts to flirt with Sheryl had him dressing down in nothing but a red thong and a fur robe and slippers all while making a seductive entrance just as Sheryl was about to leave the Crimson Light.
  • Getting Eaten Is Harmless: Fox is eaten by Mooncake, but later spat out again and no worse for the wear.
  • Lamprey Mouth: The Zargon Slug has this kind of mouth.
  • Let the Past Burn: A flashback shows Gary burning down his treehouse when leaving home.
  • Only Sane Man: Nightfall is the only one who isn't swayed by Sheryl.
  • Parental Abandonment: Sheryl abandoned Gary when he was young, admitting to the now older Gary that when John died, her heart shattered to the point she became incapable of loving anyone else.
  • Shout-Out: The title is a reference to the documentary The Notorious Mr. Bout.
  • Teleporters and Transporters: Clarence is revealed to have a device called the Eye of Fer, that allows him to instantly teleport to any place his heart desires. He demonstrates this by beating Sheryl and Gary to the vault, but then breaks the device, thus preventing the group from having an easy escape.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: Where Sheryl stored the stolen goods after the heist.
  • The Walls Are Closing In: The hallway to the vault in the Polyhedron Fortress is protected with this trap. Gary and Sheryl realize they won't make it through in time, but are saved by Clarence.
  • You Are Not Alone: When everyone notices that Mooncake is depressed and overeating over Gary spending more time with his mom and neglecting him, they schedule an intervention with him to help him. They all let him know Gary still loves him, and so do the rest of them.
