Recap / Final Space S 2 E 10 The Lost Spy

Go To

After awakening from his coma, Gary discovers that Little Cato left and decides to find him. Meanwhile, Clarence, Fox, and Ash pull off a heist, and Todd takes Sheryl Goodspeed hostage as a means of prying information about Gary's whereabouts from her.

Tropes:

  • Absurdly Spacious Sewer: The sewers under the capital of Galang-22.
  • Becoming the Mask: Sheryl was ordered to seduce John Goodspeed in order to get information out of him but she ended up marrying him and having his child. With how much she grieved at his death and her final conversation with Gary, she really did love him.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Sheryl tries to explain the situation to John after she gets caught speaking to her superior, only to get interrupted by baby Gary's crying. Sheryl becomes so frustrated that she screams at her son to shut up.
  • Binary Suns: One of Sheryl's memories which Todd explores, involves John taking Sheryl on a date to a planet with three suns, where they watch them rise and set at the same time.
  • Breather Episode: Considered lighter in tone and less intense than the previous two episodes at least in terms of action. Even though the Todd-Sheryl plotline here might debunk this.
  • Call-Back: Implied; one can easily assume that Gary’s bounty was placed by Todd.
  • Cyanide Pill: Clarence is revealed to have a poison capsule, and when the queen gets too rough with him he decides to take it. The queen however thinks it’s a recreational, takes it from him and eats it instead, seemingly killing her (however, she's only unconscious and survives).
  • Evil-Detecting Baby: Sheryl's final memory shows her speaking to her superior, only for an infant Gary to start crying. His crying is what alerts John to enter the room and catch Sheryl in the act.
  • Fan Disservice: Clarance is seen wearing nothing but a black thong when he has sex with the Queen of Galang 22. The Queen on the other hand contributes to this disservice not only in the sex scene but also when she “gives birth” to Clarence when he hides in her uterus.
  • Forgot About His Powers: During the firefight between the Team Squad and the Burner Tribe, Mooncake just hides with KVN and never even tries to fight back.
  • Get Out!: John doesn't take kindly to Sheryl telling their infant son to shut up and tells her to leave.
  • Happily Adopted: To convince Little Cato to come back, Gary offers to adopt him if he wants, at least temporarily until they can get his real dad back.
  • Hitman with a Heart: The Burner Tribe end up being genuinely touched by Gary’s adoption of Little Cato and the leader freely lets him go with Gary.
  • Having a Heart: Black Comedy of sorts when Ash admits that if Gary did die, she would have collected his heart.
  • If You Die, I Call Your Stuff: Clarence is upset that Gary is still alive because he was getting ready to divide up his stuff, and remarks it is "rude" of Gary to survive and rob them of the opportunity.
  • Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: When the bounty hunters are shooting at Gary and his group they miss every shot. AT POINT BLANK RANGE. In one scene, when Gary steps out from his cover, they continue to shoot at him for several second before finally being called off, and still miss every shot.
  • Kick the Dog: Sheryl tells a baby Gary that she wishes he was never born when her allegiances are revealed.
  • Large and in Charge: The Queen is significantly bigger than any other member of her species seen in this episode.
  • Not Again: Judging by their dialogue, this isn’t the first time Clarence poisoned a new wife, or tried to hide in her corpse till after the funeral.
  • Not Helping Your Case: When palace guards come to check on the Queen after hearing all the noise in her room, Fox impersonates the Queen’s voice, and tries to make them leave, but the excuse he uses (that the Queen fell and might be dying) only makes them more eager to come in.
  • Oh, Crap!: Little Cato's reaction when the Burning Tribe orders him to kill Gary.
  • Overdrawn at the Blood Bank: The informant who makes Gary's arm injury look severely underrated in comparison.
  • Pants-Pulling Prank: While Clarence is dancing with the Queen, Fox can be seen removing the belt of one of the guests, causing the guy’s pants to drop. He doesn’t seem to notice since he’s too busy watching the Queen and Clarence.
  • The Tape Knew You Would Say That: Lampshaded. After hearing Little Cato’s message, Gary immediately decides to ignore the boy’s request not to come look for him. Cue a second message in which Little Cato tells Gary he knew he’d say that, and that he’s serious about not wanting to be found.
  • That Came Out Wrong: When Gary is asking around for Little Cato: “Oh, hey! Have you seen my boy? I mean, he's my friend's boy, a boy I know. He's my friend. He's I guess you could say he's my boyfriend.”
  • Third Line, Some Waiting: Gary, Nightfall, KVN and Mooncake seek out a distraught runaway Little Cato. Meanwhile, Clarence brings along Ash and Fox to con the resident alien queen. And finally, Sheryl encounters Todd, who peers into her memories with John.
  • Time-Delayed Death: Seriously, with how much blood he's losing, you honestly would have expected the informant to die LONG before he asks Gary to stab him in the neck for info.
  • Too Dumb to Live: The above mentioned informant keeps asking to get stabbed as if he is expecting a different result.
  • Tranquillizer Dart: Clarence uses these to dispose of the other suitors before introducing himself to the queen.
  • Uriah Gambit: The Burner Tribe leader sends Little Cato on a mission to find Gary, believing it will be a suicide mission. He is quite surprised when Little Cato actually finds Gary (though unintentionally, as Gary sought him out).
  • Victory Is Boring: Sheryl got bored with killing all the bounty hunters and decided to let herself get captured to find out who keeps sending them.
  • Villain Team-Up: Todd makes an alliance with Sheryl to assist her in gathering dimensional keys in return for helping him get revenge on her son.
  • Watching the Sunset: During one of their dates, John took Sheryl to a planet with 3 suns, which due to their rotations set and rise at the same time.
  • Womb Horror: Through some mishaps, the alien queen Clarence marries ends up birthing him. And the jewelry he tried to steal.
