The Winds of Change is the first episode of the tenth season of Father Brown.

Father Brown discovers that a murderer is using Kembleford's new model village to plan their attacks. He also needs to find a new secretary following Mrs McCarthy's departure.

Tropes:

  • Better Manhandle the Murder Weapon: Harry Grover had arranged to meet Jennifer Mossop in a field. When he arrived, he found she had been stabbed and was dying. He pulled the knife out and was holding it when Father Brown arrived, followed shortly after by the police.
  • The Bus Came Back: Now Chief Inspector Sullivan returns to Kembleford after a run-in with a corrupt superior in London, and at the end of the episode finds himself transferred back there indefinitely.
  • Money to Throw Away: Property developer Harry Grover addresses the parish council and says that he has been told that they are not interested in the money his development will bring to the village. He goes on that if that is the case then whatever they catch they can keep and tosses a handful of banknotes into the crowd. Chaos ensues.
  • Rank Up: Inspector Sullivan returns to Kembleford; now a Chief Inspector.
  • Serial Killings, Specific Target: The murderer Peter Mossop killed his best friend Joe Tellford before murdering his wife Jennifer, because he knew that if suspicion fell on him following his wife's death, no one would believe that he would have killed his best friend.
  • Terrible Interviewees Montage: Father Brown interviews a series of unsuitable applicants while looking for a new parish secretary
  • Toyota Tripwire: On driving up upon the killer about to stab Father Brown, Mrs. Devine—who Drives Like Crazy—swings the car past him and opens her door, knocking him down.
