Recap / Family Matters S 8 E 5 Stevil

Go To

On Halloween night, Steve brings home a creepy ventriloquist dummy bearing his nerdy likeness. When an ominous lightning bolt strikes the doll, it springs to life and gives Steve a Halloween he'll never forget.

Tropes seen in this episode:

  • All Just a Dream: The majority of the episode is just a nightmare that Steve has on Halloween.
  • Content Warnings: The episode begins with Jaleel White, in character as Urkel, delivering a warning about its potentially scary content.
  • Demonic Dummy: The titular Stevil.
  • Dream Within a Dream: Steve awakens from his nightmare and is relieved that it's finally over, but when he talks to Eddie about it, the latter starts acting suspiciously verbose and rather creepy. Then he whips out an egg beater and attempts to give Steve brain surgery. Steve thankfully wakes up a second time.
  • Halloween Episode: When the series was in reruns, this episode was often pulled from the regular rotation and aired on October 31 (or as close to that date as possible).
  • Insult Backfire: Urkel calls the dummy evil, which the dummy likes enough for him to say he'll call himself "Stevil".
  • Lightning Can Do Anything: The dummy comes to life when lightning strikes him through Urkel's window.
  • Perverse Puppet: Urkel's ventriloquist dummy, a likeness of the nerd, comes to life ... and he's not happy about being mocked by the Winslows!
  • Ventriloquism: The dummy likeness of Urkel is all good-hearted fun and games ... at first.
