Recap / Family Guy S 21 E 18 Vat Man And Rob Em

Go To

The guys decide to turn Pawtucket Brewery into an after-hours bar after Peter gets a new job as night watchman. Meanwhile, Stewie and Brian hatch a plan to collect reward money for finding lost dogs.

Tropes:

  • 10-Minute Retirement: The episode begins with Pawtucket Brewery holding a retirement party for its longtime night watchman Moses. Moses manages to stay retired up until he and the guys fail to pull off a heist to replace all the stored beer that was used up on brewery grounds. Afterwards, he decides to take back his night watchman job before Peter can fess up about his actions.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: Chase is a TikTok influencer who cares more about creating viral content than the well-being of his pets, to the point where he's willing to kill them for clout.
  • Chronic Pet Killer: It turns out Chase has a propensity to kill his dogs for the sake of making viral TikTok videos, and he does so without a shred of remorse.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Once Peter manages to land on top of the beer truck the gang was going to rob, he asks what he’s supposed to do now. Joe tells him they’ll call the rival brewery and have them redirect the truck to their brewery. Before he causes the helicopter to crash, Peter asks why the heck he had to jump onto the truck if that was the entire plan.
  • Emerging from the Shadows: Moses tries this trope twice but fails both times. The first time, he didn't step out of the shadows far enough, still in the shadows until the trope has lost dramatic effect. The second time, he didn't bother to step out of the shadows at all.
Joe: You're really bad at this "emerging from darkness" thing.
  • Europeans Are Kinky: A cutaway has Brian using a "German plunger," who seems to get off on unstopping toilets and being roughly handled.
  • Impersonation-Exclusive Character: Brian poses as Rover so he and Stewie can collect the reward money. All that's known about the real Rover is what he looks like and that he's Chase's missing dog. Later, it's revealed that Rover actually ran away from his owner and for good reason.
  • Karma Houdini:
    • Peter and the guys get away with trying and failing to rob a beer truck after Moses decides to take back his night watchman job.
    • Downplayed for Chase, who gets beaten up and his stunt with Brian sabotaged by Chris, but suffers no consequences for intentionally killing multiple other dogs for online publicity.
  • Magical Negro: Lampshaded by Peter:
Peter: Wait! Are you one of those magical Black guys who helps white people with their problems and then disappears? The kind Hollywood had no problem making many movies about until a shockingly recent time?
  • No Fourth Wall: Stewie notes that Chris wanted more scenes after Chris complains about Stewie's rudeness while Stewie recruits Chris to help find Brian.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title of this episodes parodies Batman & Robin.
  • Professional Slacker: Peter offers to fill in as the new night watchman specifically because the job requires him to sit and watch.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Stewie and Brian conspire to have the latter pose as a missing dog named Rover in order to collect the reward money. It backfires spectacularly when it turns out that Rover's owner Chase has a propensity to kill his dogs for Internet clout and that he plans to subject Brian to the same fate.
  • Sudden Downer Ending: The Stinger shows the entire Griffin family having been Killed Offscreen from carbon monoxide poisoning. Of course, with the show running on Negative Continuity, it's undone by the next episode.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: While it's revealed why Rover ran away from Chase, it's still unknown what happened to him while Brian took his place.
