Recap / Family Guy S 14 E 10 Candy Quahog Marshmallow

Go To

Peter, Joe, and Cleveland become obsessed with Winter Summer, a Korean soap opera that starred a young Glenn Quagmire, and when the quartet fly to South Korea to find the tape containing the series finale, Quagmire becomes convinced to stay in Korea.

Tropes:

  • Asians Eat Pets: One of the lyrics to Peter, Cleveland, and Joe's pop song that they put on to convince Quagmire not to stay in Korea is "You really love pussy, they eat dog".
  • Bait-and-Switch: One cutaway shows that Peter wants to be a half-man/half-horse... with the front being the horse half and the back being the human half.
Peter: (as a horse with human legs) Give up these legs? Don't be absurd.
  • Bus Crash: It's revealed Dee Dee-Donna's estranged mother from The Cleveland Show-shot herself to death.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: In-Universe—Quagmire's still massively famous in South Korea for his role in Winter Summer, even 20 years after the show ended. It's to the point of where Quagmire's immediately recognized by pretty much everyone at the airport when he and his friends arrive in South Korea.
  • I Choose to Stay: After reconnecting with his old flame, Quagmire announces he's staying in Korea forever, much to his friends' disappointment.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: In-Universe—while Winter Summer is still fairly popular (judging by how famous Quagmire still is for his role as "American Johnny"), the guys have a very hard time finding a copy of the show's final episode (even in the show's home country). And before going to Korea, the guys could find barely anything about the show online—this could be at least partially justified by Quagmire explaining to his friends that Winter Summer never aired outside of Korea.
  • Love Triangle: Hee-Sun, the character portrayed by Sujin (Quagmire's co-star/former lover), is pined for by both American Johnny (Quagmire's character) and a character named Bong-Hwa.
  • Manly Tears: Peter, Joe, and Cleveland cry after watching the penultimate episode of Winter Summer.
  • No-Sell: Despite singing a rather impressive musical number to convince Quagmire to return to Quahog, the guys still don't convince him.
  • Old Shame:
  • Parody: "Candy, Quahog, Marshmallow" parodies "Bubble Pop!" by Hyuna, to the point where some of the effects in the music video are similar.
  • Romance on the Set: In-Universe—Quagmire and Sujin (the actress who played his primary love interest in Winter Summer) were romantically involved in real-life and not just on the show. Even 20-years after the show ended, it's clear they still have feelings for each other.
  • Serious Business: The Korean soap opera Winter Summer becomes this for Peter and the guys; they were willing to travel all the way to South Korea just to see the final episode, and Cleveland even threatens to kill himself if his in-universe One True Pairing doesn't end up together.
  • Shipper on Deck: Cleveland ships Hee-Sun with Bong-Hwa, even going so far as to claim that he'll kill himself if they end up together.
  • Shipping Torpedo: Joe doesn't approve of Hee-Sun getting together with Bong-Hwa, considering Bong-Hwa to be dishonorable.
  • Status Quo Is God: Despite his renewed relationship with Sujin, Quagmire ultimately can't bring himself to commit once he finds out she expects them to live with her entire family as well, and decides to return to America with his friends.
  • Word Salad Lyrics: The episode title alludes to a pastiche of K-Pop songs that Peter, Cleveland and Joe sing in the episode, spoofing the gratuitous English in them.
