Recap / Family Guy S 13 E 4 Brian The Closer

Go To

Brian gets reconstructive dental surgery after smashing his face into a hydrant. Brian's new, megawatt smile nets him a job as a real estate agent, and Brian uses the opportunity to convince Quagmire to buy a rundown condo with the bonus money he recently received.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • The Bad Guy Wins: Brian's not really evil for the most part, but he truly is the main antagonist of this episode. And he won. He successfully scammed lot of cash from Quagmire and while Quagmire manages to bash his face in, he still has more than enough money to get it fixed.
  • Bowdlerise: The following scenes have been cut/altered between the TV version and the DVD version:
    • When Quagmire sits down next to Brian (who is drowning his sorrows because no one will help him get reconstructive surgery for his teeth), there's an extra scene of Quagmire telling Jerome that a woman he had sex with is passed out in his vomit in an alley and to bring her some onion rings. When Jerome leaves, Quagmire tells Brian that the woman he left in the alley is going to "think her night is getting worse" when she sees Jerome (implying that Jerome will rape her, which does explain why FOX wanted the scene cut).
    • Quagmire doing penis bench presses: The TV version crops the shots so we don't see anything below the waist (even though there's nothing explicit. He doesn't have his pants down, nor do we see his butt clenching or any suggestive pelvic movements or sign of his penis out in the open).
    • When Brian tricks Quagmire into running out the clock so that way he can't get his money back: Brian's line when the clock strikes midnight on the TV version is "Enjoy your craphole, dumbass!" On the DVD version, the line is "Enjoy your shithole, cocksucker!"
  • Cats Are Mean: When planning to hide from Quagmire, Brian declares that he will be harder to find than a nice cat. A cutaway shows a cat mocking its owner for having a miscarriage.
  • Breast Expansion: One of the cutaway gags involves Lois having humongous breasts after getting a boob job that involved Peter telling the doctor to go much larger than the C-cups Lois wanted (and for added humor, they're so big that Peter can actually fit between them).
  • The Dog Bites Back: This episode could be seen as Brian getting even for all the times Quagmire pulled a Villain Ball Magnet with him, especially when Quagmire beat Brian for having sex with Quagmire's newly transsexual father ("Quagmire's Dad").
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Even though Quagmire paid for Brian to have his teeth fixed, Brian still scams him out of money.
  • Heel Realization: Subverted. Brian seems to have realized that he was in the wrong for selling Quagmire the rundown condo, and that he's a bad person in general, but he was only stalling for the condo's refund deadline.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Brian. See above.
  • Karma Houdini: Peter. Despite being the cause of the entire plot, he never receives any comeuppance for causing Brian's injury, the family never calls him out on his actions, and he doesn't even seem to care about his actions either.
  • Kick the Dog: After Brian's accident, Quagmire bluntly tells him that his face looks like a used condom, making Brian cry.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Brian gets a well-deserved smack to the face by Quagmire, thus losing all his teeth.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Quagmire actually makes a rare non-antagonistic move to Brian by helping him fix his teeth, which is what eventually leads Brian to con him out of his money by the end of the episode.
  • No Sympathy: None of the Griffins are the least bit sympathetic to Brian's situation, with Lois flat-out telling him she's not wasting money on taking him to the vet, and Peter only half-heartedly offering the rope back when he realizes it doesn't do anything.
  • Pet the Dog: Quagmire surprisingly takes pity on Brian's predicament and gives him the opportunity for dental surgery.
  • Pyrrhic Victory:
    • Yeah, Quagmire calls out Brian on his crap and knocks his new teeth out, but he's still out a ton of his hard-earned money thanks to a guy he helped out during his time of need. It's unknown how Quagmire got his money back.
    • However, Brian suffers this, too. While he successfully scammed Quagmire, he got his new teeth knocked out in bloody fashion. Though he presumably has the money to fix this, he still gets fired from his new job (thus losing the opportunity to become a partner) and gets openly ridiculed by the family for washing out of real estate.
  • Shady Real Estate Agent: Brian zigzags this trope. He's very successful at selling homes to everyone from Bonnie Swanson to Jason Voorhees, and there's no indication he was deceiving them. He plays the trope completely straight in his efforts to make partner at his firm by conning Quagmire into buying a decrepit, worthless condo.
  • Take That!:
    • Peter says one should never judge a book or movie by its cover. It then cuts to him punching a copy of Funny People.
    • In the last scene, Lois openly derides real estate agents after Brian says it's a tough job. Even Peter gets in on it.
Peter: I once beat a real estate agent in a game of chess. Me! A well-known buffoon!
  • Til Murder Do Us Part: Brian questions showing Bonnie a house with such foundation problems that it slants in the direction of a cliff. At her request, he opens the sliding door, which causes a wheelchair she brought to roll outside and go off said cliff.
    Bonnie: [darkly] I'll take it.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Brian. After Quagmire (who normally hates him) helps get his teeth fixed, Brian screws him over.
  • Viewers Are Morons: In-universe. A real estate ad is played which uses the word affluent and immediately feels the need to inform the viewer that "affluent means rich."
  • Villain Protagonist: This episode is focused on Brian, who's planning on scamming Quagmire off his entire bonus after he helped him out.
