Recap / Family Guy S 10 E 9 Grumpy Old Man

Go To

When Carter falls asleep at the wheel and crashes his car, Lois and Peter decide to put Carter and Babs in a retirement home.

Examples:

  • The Death of Death: Death is killed in the car accident Carter caused, and a taller version of himself, Super Death, tells him that he's going to be reincarnated as a kid in China. He disappears for a second, then reappears. Apparently, Death was born as a girl.
  • Ear Ache: Babs' knitting needles end up impaling Stewie's ears when the car crashes.
  • Egg Sitting: A running joke in this episode is Mayor Adam West looking after an egg he was assigned to look after in high school.
  • Games of the Elderly: To show him how great it is to be retired, Peter takes Carter to a game of bingo. He encourages Carter to cheat by stealing another man's card and claiming it as his own.
  • Heroism Won't Pay the Bills: One scene has the family watching "The Superfriends' Accountant", in which the titular accountant tells the Justice League that they're hemorrhaging money and that crimefighting alone isn't enough to get them out of the red.
  • Needlework Is for Old People: Babs is shown knitting while riding in the car with Carter and Stewie. After Carter crashes the car, her knitting needles end up impaled in Stewie's ears.
  • Scatterbrained Senior: After being put in a retirement home for 6 months, Carter becomes unable to say anything that makes any sense.
  • Senior Sleep-Cycle: The episode's plot is set in motion after Carter Pewterschmidt falls asleep while driving.
  • Take That!: There are quite a lot of them towards Florida in this episode.
  • We Want Our Jerk Back!: For most of this episode, Lois and Peter try to convince Carter to retire and move into a nursing home, even though Carter would rather continue to run his company. Carter eventually complies, but after six months of retirement, he becomes a Lazy Bum who neglects his own hygiene and speaks incoherently. Thus, they have to bring him back to his company and return him to his position as the Corrupt Corporate Executive of Pewterschmidt Industries in order to get him out of this funk.
  • Workaholic: Carter hates the thought of being put in a retirement home and would rather work until he dies.
