Recap / Family Guy S 10 E 4 Stewie Goes For A Drive

Go To

Stewie crashes Brian's car and runs away to live with Consuela the maid. Meanwhile, Peter becomes obsessed with the idea that Ryan Reynolds (guest-starring as himself) may be sexually attracted to him.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Sexuality: In the real world, the celebrity Ryan Reynolds is straight. Here in this episode of Family Guy, he is portrayed as possibly pansexual.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Stewie says "at least I'm not getting stabbed by some random guy on the street," it starts raining, the inverse of what happened in "Brian Writes a Bestseller". He then gets stabbed anyway.
  • Breather Episode: Compered to the two previous episodes, this has a lighthearted comical story focusing mostly on Brain and Stewie.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Brian and Stewie make up but Peter loses his friendship with Ryan Reynolds due to mistakening Reynolds for being gay and Reynolds becoming offended by that and cutting ties with Peter.
  • Bowdlerization: The following changes were made between the DVD version and the TV version:
    • The cutaway of Peter being freaked out by the screaming autistic woman in the waiting room was longer on DVD than on TV.
    • Peter saying "Big fucking deal" when he meets Shelley Duvall wasn't bleeped out on the DVD version.
    • Stewie berating Gavin had an extra line on the DVD ("I tried to stick up for you but I can't, because everybody hates you").
    • After Consuela refuses to let Stewie leave with Brian, Stewie says on the TV version "This is so messed up right now." On DVD, "messed up" is replaced with "eff'd up".
  • Call-Back:
    • The running gag of Brian's failed writing career is revisited as he is seen writing a new novel with an equally ludicrous storyline like Faster Than the Speed of Love.
    • Stewie listens to Weenie and the Butt from "Mother Tucker".
    • Stewie previously drove Quagmire's Winnegago in "Bango Was His Name Oh".
    • As Stewie is running away, he comments that at least he isn't getting stabbed, only for it to rain, much like Brian Writes a Bestseller where he said that at least it wasn't raining... and then some guy stabs Stewie anyway.
  • Don't Tell Mama: Stewie doesn't want Brian to tell Peter and Lois about him driving Brian's car. Brian says that he has no choice, since Stewie could've been seriously hurt (possibly even killed). Ultimately though, he doesn’t go through with it.
  • Fartillery: Exaggerated for laughs in one Cutaway Gag. Peter mentions that the food he's eating may give him "the kind of farts he gets from eating Mexican food", followed by a scene where he farts after eating Mexican food and it becomes a dark green ghost wearing a sombrero that screams and fires guns into the air, causing everyone to run away screaming.
  • Gave Up Too Soon: Thinking that Brian will tell Peter and Lois that Stewie crashes Brian's car (and that he can't be talked out of it), he runs away to avoid punishment. Then Brian reveals that he decided not to tell them after all, and if Stewie hadn't run away when he did, he would have found that out sooner.
  • It's All My Fault: Brian decides not to get Stewie in trouble with Peter and Lois because he deduces that it was his fault for leaving Stewie in the car which instigated his want to drive.
  • Kids Driving Cars: Stewie takes Brian's car for a drive after thinking he is capable. Deconstructed, since he crashes the car and angers Brian.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Stewie shoots Consuela in the foot and then shoots up her place when she and her nephew threaten Brian with a gun to keep Stewie.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Played With. Peter thinks that Ryan Reynolds has a crush on him. Though Ryan claims to be attracted to him "in the way a man is attracted to a woman", it has nothing to do with Peter's gender, but his "spirit", and Ryan is annoyed at Peter for labelling it "gay".
  • Neck Snap: Peter would rather snap his own neck than join Lois' book club.
  • Out of Focus: Meg and Chris appear in one cutaway gag and scream, but have no other speaking lines.
  • Shout-Out:
    • After Herbert wins the Justin Bieber tickets, he says to Jesse, "Never say never!", referencing Bieber's song of the same name.
    • Adzin's outfit bears a strong resemblance to a Sandman from the film Logan's Run.
    • Stewie says he should be on Glee, making this the second Seth MacFarlane show after The Cleveland Show to mention the show.
    • The songs that Stewie suggests to Brian to play on a boombox during his running away video include "With or Without You" by U2, "Solsbury Hill" by Peter Gabriel, "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield, "Live Like We're Dying" by Kris Allen, "Thank You" by Dido, and "Somebody" by Depeche Mode. "Thank You" by Dido plays at the end of the video.
    • The song Stewie sings along with in the car is "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood.
    • Justin Bieber's song "Baby" is mentioned with rapper Ludacris.
    • The music in the Shoe & Shoelace cartoon when Stewie fantasizes about being sent to Siberia is reminiscent of that of the former National Anthem of the U.S.S.R.
    • Another The Price is Right parody is shown in this episode. Yet the music in the background is reminiscent of that of Family Feud.
  • Take That!:
    • Lois reads about Snooki dying in Star magazine.
    • Bob Barker is mentioned in when Peter is annoyed by a dog with two different colored eyes and appears to have an erection.
