Recap / Family Guy Fanon S2E17 "Between Sanity & Madness"

Go To

Peter's Bible-thumping father, Francis, comes for another visit. And this time, he's brought Peter's gambling mother Thelma with him as well. But as it turns out, they're visit is revealed to be more of a stayover, when they reveal they lost their house due to gambling in Vegas. So Peter allows them to stay over to have another stab at having some family bonding he never got with his parents... if he counts losing his sanity on his parents "family bonding".

This episode contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Context Change: The episode takes a line from the original show's episode "The Father, The Son, and The Holy Fonz" where Stewie qips "Nothing says, 'Eat up' like a bleeding Jew nailed to a piece of wood.". However, in comparison to the original show where Stewie said it after Francis hangs a crucifix in the kitchen, here Brian says the line after Francis showcases the family he bought a statue version of a crucifix and had the line slightly reworked to "Yeah, nothing says 'Welcome home' like a statue of a bleeding, half-naked Jew nailed to a piece of wood."
  • Armor-Piercing Response: Peter of all people give one to Lois.
Lois: Peter, how can childish hope you should've let go of years ago be a good reason to [let Francis and Thelma stay here]?
Peter: I had hope we would have a lovely family when we got married. And if that hope came true, don't you think the same hope can work for my parents?
  • Big Damn Heroes: In the second act, Brian tracks down Peter and Lois and saves them from drowning in their submerged car.
  • Blatant Lies: Francis tells Peter he quit his job as the Pope’s special assistant and did some soul searching with Thelma and decided to make amends with Peter. In reality, Francis got fired due to being a nuisance and went with Thelma to gamble in Las Vegas until they lost their money. And went to Peter to Blackmail him into giving him more money, considering he’d did so in the past.
  • Bookends: The beginning of the episode shows the Griffins hurrying into the car and driving off to avoid Francis and Thelma's visit. The episode ends with them again hurrying into a car, but instead with Francis and Thelma, and to avoid Francis' father.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: When Peter ask for the reason as to why Francis and Thelma have come back, which Francis responds with "Hey, our contracts say we have seasonal guest roles". Peter breaks character and tells Francis he meant the episode reason. Causing Francis to break character as well and scramble in his script to find what he was going to say and the two redoing the conversation, the episode continuing as nothing happen.
  • Call-Back: Peter and the family reference the events of Francis' last visit when trying to get Peter to not let Francis and Thelma stay.
  • Continuity Nod: When Brian suggests kicking Francis and Thelma out, Peter angrily scolds Brian for suggest that, especially since Brian had experience being a homeless person.
  • Delayed Reaction:
Chris: Great timing, Grampa. Now I can see the police blocking the road.
Francis: Well, thank you. I've had many experiences with quick timing, as I was a racecar driver in my-WHAT?!
  • Extra-Long Episode: Of sorts, compared to the other scripts posted, this one is over sixty-five pages long from its extended cut, making it the longest of any fan episode.
  • Pet the Dog: While under the rise of being their new parents, Francis and Thelma show rather admirable care for Chris and Meg, with Francis even heading to Meg's school and whacked her bully Connie with a bible for calling Meg a bible-thumper. Granted, they were using them to their own advantage, but still showed generosity nonetheless.
  • Totally Radical: Francis and Thelma dress in 90's clothing and use 90's slang to appeal to Meg and Chris. They have the reaction one expected to seeing their grandparents trying to be hip with the kids.
Meg: I think I just threw up in my mouth.
Chris: That's better than me dying a little inside.
    • Even better is that the episode in this timeline is suppose to have aired in 2000 and led to this interaction:
Francis: Damn, Skippy! It's the 90's!
Chris: Grandpa, it's 2000. People literally don't say that anymore.
