Recap / Fairy May Cry, 9 "Clipping the Fairies' Wings"

Go To

As Dante trains himself to be better prepared for his twin brother, Vergil begins launching attacks on Fairy Tail, starting with Team Shadowgear, Maco, and Wakaba.

  • Always Someone Better: Trish flat out tells the enraged Strongest Team that Vergil can take them all down easily, with even Erza having slim odds. While Natsu is angered at her calling them weak, she clarifies they are strong, but Vergil is that much better, something he proves later in the chapter via Curb-Stomp Battle.
  • Antagonistic Offspring: Discussed when Fairy Tail wonders why Vergil, a Son of Sparda, is so power hungry. Erza points out that being related doesn't guarantee people will follow the same path, noting Makarov, Ivan, and Laxus as one such example.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Everyone grows protective of Wendy when Trish reveals Vergil wouldn't hesitate to cut her down like the others.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Vergil delivers a brutal one to Shadow Gear, Macao and Wakaba, shrugging off their initial assault without so much as a scratch before proceeding to wreck them all in a stunning display of speed and skill, while still giving off the impression of barely trying. Levy can barely muster up resistance out of fear, and he easily (and literally) cuts down any attack she throws at him as he slowly walks towards her. The only reason anyone survived is because he decided they're Not Worth Killing, and needs Levy for some unknown reason.
  • Family of Choice: Fairy Tail's protectiveness over Dante and outrage at Vergil saying their feud has nothing to do with them makes their status as this clear.
  • Hope Spot: When Jet, Droy, Wakaba, and Macoa decide to beat up Vergil their opponent seemingly can't dodge their magic powers... only for Vergil to get up unscathed and demolish them with a fraction of his own power.
  • Hypocrite: Vergil of all people warning that pride often leads to one's downfall. Lampshaded by Macao, who notes he's not that humble himself.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Porlyusica's reasons for hating humans are taken from the Phantom Lord arc of canon.
    • Likewise, Jet and Droy's initial beatdown of Vergil is reminiscent of how they treated Gajeel shortly after he joined.
  • Pet the Dog: The typically cranky Polyusica has nothing but sincere respect for Sparda, despite not understanding why he'd want to protect humans. Dante doesn't argue her reasons for disliking humans but says there are good ones, citing his mother, something she doesn't dispute.
  • Smug Super: Vergil gives a cocky smirk when Shadow Gear, Macao, and Wakaba challenge him, and barely takes them seriously. The subsequent thrashing he gives them shows he has every right to be that confident.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Trish admits that Vergil wouldn't hesitate to kill Wendy, to Fairy Tail's shock.
