Recap / Fairy May Cry, 13 "A Devil's Game"

Go To

Now knowing that Vergil is the one that took their missing members, Fairy Tail charges into battle with Dante to perform a rescue mission. But Vergil may be more prepared than they think...

  • Big Brother Instinct: All the captured Fairy Tail members are furious with Vergil for going so far as to kidnap Wendy as well.
  • Continuity Nod: Vergil identifies Juvia as a former member of Phantom Lord's Elemental Four.
  • Divide and Conquer: Vergil's strategy in a nutshell, splitting Fairy Tail up with a series of booby traps so he doesn't have to fight them all at once.
  • Good Cannot Comprehend Evil: The captured members of Fairy Tail cannot understand why he has such a low view of humanity, and are shocked at his declaration that he 'severed' his human emotions. He brushes it off, saying they're not demons and wouldn't understand.
  • Humans Are Insects: Vergil's opinion of them in a nutshell, outright saying he despises his human half.
  • I Warned You: Erza gives a warning to a group of gorilla like demons before delivering a beatdown.
  • Mama Bear: Carla insists on joining the others to help rescue Wendy.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Mirajane's callout of Vergil has the same words as the canon episode The Course of the Holy War.
    • To deal with the many members of Fairy Tail, Vergil summons demons that appeared as bosses in the first game.
  • The Nose Knows: Despite not knowing where he's going, the rest of Fairy Tail manage to track Dante thanks to Natsu and Gajeel's exceptional sense of smell.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: To deal with the many members of Fairy Tail, Vergil summons demons to keep them busy. These comprise of Griffon, Phantom, and Nightmare.
  • Rescue Arc: The chapter kicks off Fairy Tail's efforts to rescue their friends that Vergil kidnapped.
  • The Social Darwinist: Vergil's low opinion of humans (and his own human side) comes from the belief that they are weak, and identifies more with his more powerful demon side.
  • Sore Loser: When Lucy reminds Natsu and Gray how easily Vergil defeated them before, they insist that he sucker punched them.
  • Supervillain Lair: Vergil is holed up in an old temple that used to be devoted to worshipping Sparda that has booby traps, is three times larger than the Fairy Tail guild hall, and has ominous lightning to boot. Lampshaded by Lucy.
Lucy: Why do bad guys always pick scary hideouts?
  • Virtue Is Weakness: Vergil believes all human emotions are inherently a weakness.
