Go To

After bailing out of the unemployment office, Frank turns to Rosie's friend, Smokey, for a job, but not before helping Kevin move into the basement after he ditches school. Meanwhile, Sue gets a new job as a secretary, but is mistreated by the sexist heads of her company.

Tropes:

  • Bigger Than Jesus: Vic mentions that cocaine is better than Jesus as he tries some.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: When Susan comes home an dasks her children how their day was, they each respond differently. Bill replies that he got enough money from his paper route, Kevin replies that he is getting better at guitar, and Maureen responds that a policeman came over to talk with Goomer
  • Broken Pedestal: Kevin and Frank bond over similar struggles, and the latter helps the former move into the basement. However, when Sue comes home, she suspiciously asks Frank if he was actually at the employment office that morning. Frank lies to her right in front of a stunned Kevin. This is against what Frank told him earlier that day, which was that "a real man never lies." This ruins Kevin's newfound respect for his father, and he leaves the room angrily.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The job advertising that Rosie gave Frank in the previous episode comes into play, as Frank ditched the unemployment office without applying, so he has to use this job as his new job.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Otto comes down the Murphy basement and mentions that it reminds him of a basement he used to live in for a while with 16 others. He then adds that it was usually quiet in there. Vic thinks that he's referring to quiet sex parties.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Tired of sharing a room with Bill, Kevin complains about it to his father. Frank decides that the solution for that is to move him into the basement. So, he helps Kevin clear out all the junk from there to make it his place. However, he never confided with Sue about this to see how she would take this. Indeed, when Sue comes home, she's angry not only for this reason but also because all their leftover belongings are out in the backyard for people to take.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: One of the circus workers at the unemployment office that Frank goes to is an albino African-American. Later on, Smokey tells Frank that he has an albino son who left him to join the circus.
  • Funny Background Event: While Bill and Philip are walking to Randy, they pass by Sawitzki and Son, where Charlie is once again hitting on an unamused Doreen.
  • Must State If You're a Cop: Randy, Bill's boss, feels threatened by Philip. He tells him that if he's a cop, he has to tell him so. Philip replies that this is not actually true, it's a popular misconception.
  • When I Was Your Age...: Frank tells Kevin this involving the problems he had with his father.
