Deconflict

A woman is abducted from her own home. The task force must investigate and Jess discovers similarities in this case to an old case he worked 18 years ago in 2002 when he first joined the FBI with the case becoming personal for him.

Tropes:

  • Evil All Along: Avery Garnier (aka Elyse Sidchuck) wasn’t just some random woman Hewitt took hostage during the robbery back then, she was his accomplice. That was until she decided to betray him by running off with the money when he wasn’t looking and tricked the authorities into putting her into Witness Protection to keep Hewitt from finding her.
  • Master Actor: Elyse was an aspiring actor who dreamed of being on Broadway and was skilled enough of one back then to fool even Jess by not showing any call signs between herself and Hewitt when pretending to be his hostage. Although Hewitt considers her to be a hack due to her choosing to perform in community theatre, claiming that it's something that anyone regardless of their level of talent can do.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Hewitt’s M.O. for kidnapping Elyse, getting revenge on her for betraying him after the robbery by unmasking her as his accomplice and tearing apart the life she built for herself while in Witness Protection, including murdering her husband and her secret lover.
  • Terminally-Ill Criminal: The team deals with Maurice Hewitt, a fugitive from Jess's past who eighteen years ago was responsible for a bank robbery that resulted in several deaths, including that of a pregnant police officer. The reason why he's resurfacing now is that he's dying from untreatable cancer, having decided to use the time he has left to get revenge on his partner who betrayed him after the robbery and to have one last showdown with Jess in the process. After being apprehended, Hewitt tries to goad Jess into killing him by taunting him about his late wife, only for Jess to decide not to since he's going to die anyway, although he confiscates Hewitt's remaining meds so that his death in prison will be more painful. However, it turns out Hewitt actually did regret killing the aforementioned officer, having visited her daughter along the way to give her a gift as a form of atonement for his actions.
  • Witless Protection Program: Subverted. It was Elyse herself who blew her own cover, having been careless enough to show her face in several pictures from repeatedly being involved in her favorite play at the community center which allowed Hewitt to track her down. Her also frequently posting pictures of herself on social media likely didn’t help either.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: The reason for Hewitt resurfacing now after spending almost two decades in hiding is because he's dying from an untreatable cancer, having decided to use the time he has left to get revenge on Elyse for betraying him and to have one last showdown with Jess in the process.
