Eureka holds a séance.

Carter: Section 5? I hate that section.

Carter finds out more than he bargained for when he's trapped in an alternate dimension with the new scientist. Meanwhile, the father of Lexi's babies comes to town.

Tropes

  • The Ace: Duncan, father of Lexi's twins, is a doctor with the World Health Organisation who works to cure infectious diseases, has a basic knowledge of AI systems and how they could be implemented in his work. Fargo describes him as "So cool!"
  • Actor Allusion: Jaime Ray Newman was in an episode of Medium. Here, she's mistaken for a ghost after being trapped in the fifth dimension.
  • Asshole Victim: Dr. Johnson is rude to Tess, refusing her help in recalibrating the return device and dismissing her as a "ham radio operator" for her work with SETI. He declares the Nobel prize is all but his, seconds before the badly-calibrated device electrocutes him.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Jack and Tess. Also Drs Drechmeyer and Curtis, who used to be married.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Lexi gets new, high-tech maternity clothes that make her look skinny just before her lover who doesn't know she's pregnant arrives.
  • Disappeared Dad: After an episode of trying to get rid of him, Lexi finally tells the father of her twins that she's pregnant. He's out the door in seconds. Though he does leave with an "I have to think about this," and does return for the next episode.
  • Fake Relationship: Lexi is unable to tell Duncan about her pregnancy, and pretends to be in a relationship with Fargo - who happens to walk by - instead. It gets more complicated when Duncan and Fargo hit it off.
Lexi: Sometimes it's like we've been together forever!
Fargo: And sometimes, it seems like it just started.
  • Foreshadowing: When Carter and Tess travel in the lift with the mail carrier, they're amused when he sings and dances to "Car Wash" like no one's watching. Because, as far as he knows, no one is.
  • Intangible Man: Someone walks through Carter shortly after he and Tessa are rendered out of phase. The other person doesn't notice, but Carter is dragged back several paces. Tessa immediately shouts, "Do it again!" and then tries it for herself.
  • Internal Reveal: Carter overhears Allison and Henry discussing "the signal." He repeats those words later to Allison, and her reaction tells him it's a big deal.
  • It's Personal: Dr Drechmeyer's mother is revealed to have been a famous clairvoyant, and his work is aimed at proving she wasn't a fraud. Dr. Curtis complains that this is why they broke up.
Dr. Curtis: When your husband goes off the deep end...
Henry: ...Yeah, you try not to fall in with him.
  • Running Gag: The mail carrier sings along to "Car Wash".
  • Shout-Out:
    • To Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Next Phase" and Stargate SG-1 episode "Crystal Skull", both involving people out of phase with reality.
    • After a "haunting" incident, Dr Drechmeyer says, "They're heeeeeere!"
    • Of Lexi's choosing to fake a relationship with Fargo rather than tell Duncan about her pregnancy, Zoe says, "Oh, what a tangled web we weave!" quoting Walter Scott.
    • Carter refers to some of Dr Drechmeyer's equipment as a "Ghost Whisperer machine."
    • Dr Drechmeyer's first name is Murray, referencing Bill Murray of Ghostbusters fame. Johnson later chastises Jack and Tess for relying on a "Ghostbuster" when they became trapped in the fifth dimension.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Considering his first attempt to return to the normal dimension ended with him unconscious and burned, you'd think Dr Johnson would be more willing to accept Tess' help for the next try. He doesn't. He dies.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Dr. Curtis admits to Allison that the devices Dr. Drechmeyer planted around town are just sensors and couldn't cause the disturbances, when she could have kept quiet and got their lab for herself.
  • Working with the Ex: Dr. Drechmeyer and Dr. Curtis are divorced but still share a lab. There's tension.
Dr. Curtis: [Spotting Carter] Finally, a man with a gun! Don't be afraid to use it.
