Recap / Emerald City S 1 E 5 Everybody Lies

Go To

West: Who is K. Chapman?
Dorothy: I don't know. She was my mother!
West: She should have taught you how to tell the truth!
Dorothy: I'm not lying! I'm not lying! I don't know her!
West: Your own mother? Even dogs know their bitch from whence they came. My mother, the Mistress of the South, birthed over a thousand children before she died. She gave life to every witch in Oz, and even she found the time to care for me. Nurture me. But your mother couldn't care less about one baby girl? How rotten do you have to be for that? She must've sniffed it out. Something in you that's broken and couldn't ever be fixed.
Dorothy: Go to hell.

Determined to exact revenge for her sister's death, West captures Dorothy and uses magic to interrogate her. Dorothy is repaid by Tip, now West’s acolyte, for a previous good deed.

The Wizard seeks aid from the Kingdom of Ev to build a weapons arsenal to help him defeat the Beast Forever. Princess Langwidere would rather see the Emerald City burn than work with the Wizard. After a rocky start to their relationship, Jack and Langwidere get closer.

Lucas and Sylvie search for Dorothy, evading the Wizard's guards. Lucas learns that Eamonn is an old acquaintance, who knows that Lucas’ name is Roan, and may hold the key for Lucas to recover his lost memories.

Tropes:

  • Cool Mask: Worn by the townspeople as part of the festival celebrations. Lucas and Dorothy use them to try and hide from the guards.
  • I Lied: West promised Ojo that she would free his wife from the Prison of the Abject, in exchange for bringing her Dorothy. She didn't.
    West: I lied! Everybody lies!
  • I Shall Taunt You: West spends as much time taunting Dorothy as she does interrogating her. It's hard to tell how much of it is West lashing out in anger after losing a sister, and how much is a ploy to get Dorothy to cough up information.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • West says Glinda's first line from The Wizard of Oz when Dorothy is brought to her.
West: So, are you a good witch or a bad witch?
    • The Wizard listens to "Breathe," from Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon." The album is famous for its uncanny synchronization with the 1939 Wizard of Oz film.
  • Rescue Romance: After purchasing Jack from Jane to be her friend (seeing as she's never had one and doesn't know "where to get one"), Langwidere tells Jack she wants "more" than friendship after he defends her from a pack of thugs.
  • Title Drop: When Ojo demands that West keep her end of the bargain and free his wife from the Prison of the Abject, West sneeringly tells him "everybody lies" to get what they want.
  • Wham Line: When Dorothy tells the Wizard that Karen Chapman is her mother, he says "Dorothy, you've come home!" This indicates that Dorothy has been to Oz before, despite having no memory of it.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Toto is barely seen and there's no explanation of where he was.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Tip doesn't help Dorothy escape from West's confinement at first, blaming her for everything that happened since she left Mombi's. She changes her mind later.
