Recap / Emerald City S 1 E 2 Prison Of The Abject

Go To

Mombi: What kind of witch are you?
Dorothy: I'm not. But I get that a lot here.
Mombi: And you? How long have you been in the Wizard's Guard?
Lucas: I... I don't know.
Mombi: So... I have a not witch, whose potions raise the dead, and a not Wizard's Guard who carries their sword. What else... are you not?

Glinda and West prepare a funerary ritual to store East's soul and spells within their sacred temple, sealed up by the Wizard as per his ban on magic. The Wizard opens up the ceremony to the public, the ritual terrifying them and changing their once respected view on the witches. Tensions between the Wizard and Glinda fray as he requests the Prison of the Abject be re-opened, and Glinda tells him it's not possible.

Eamonn and a band of soldiers track Dorothy, but when one of his subordinates tries to murder him so they can go home, Eamonn kills him off-screen.

Lucas falls ill, and Dorothy takes him to the witch Mombi for help. Mombi points out a sword Lucas carries belongs to one of the Wizard's soldiers, who persecute magic practitioners. Dorothy discovers Mombi's ward Tip is imprisoned but Mombi claims it is for his own good since he is ill. Mombi poisons Lucas, but Dorothy heals him. She frees Tip with help from his friend Jack, both boys fleeing into the night. Mombi tries to murder Dorothy, but Lucas comes to the rescue and kills Mombi (though it doesn't stick). The next day, Jack discovers Tip has transformed into a girl.

Tropes:

  • Exact Words: When the Wizard asks Glinda and West to keep the Prison of the Abject running, Glinda tells him that all of East's spells died with her and they can't replicate them. This was entirely true, but she neglected to mention that there was a ritual that could be used to retrieve the spells from her corpse.
  • Finger-Twitching Revival: At the end of the episode, this is the first sign that Mombi has revived herself after Lucas's rather enthusiastic attempt to kill her.
  • Magic Dance: East's funeral rites included much swaying and shivering on the part of Glinda's acolytes and West's employees, as well as some flailing and shaking on the part of West herself. It's unclear how much of this was required for the magic of the funeral ritual to work (Glinda and West only mention "tongue" and "singing her to rest" when they discuss the ceremony) and how much was for show, but why would they bother with the theatrics when the Wizard admitted that he opened the ceremony up to the public to reinforce their prejudice against witches? It's implied not all rituals require this (Glinda looks shocked when West starts to dance), so it may be unique to the specific ritual West performed to take East's spells from her corpse.
  • Magical Incantation: Glinda makes much fuss over West's "tongue" prior to East's funeral in the chapel - she seems to believe that West's drug habit will interfere with her ability to "sing her [East] to rest." The ceremony itself consists of much indecipherable chanting on the part of both Glinda and West, as well as some gyrating and thrashing from West before she sucks the spells out of East's corpse and ingests them.
  • No Plans, No Prototype, No Backup: The Wizard sanctioned East to use magic in the creation of the Prison of the Abject, a site where non-cardinal witches who violated the ban on magic were locked away in a state of semi-suspended animation with their magic painfully suppressed. When East is killed, the magic-less Wizard suddenly finds himself unable to access the prisoners. When he asks Glinda to open the prison, Glinda informs him that East's spells died with her, and that it would be impossible to recreate the magic that East used to operate the prison. This isn't totally true — West preserves East's spells during the funeral ceremony and stores them away in the temple's secret underground crypt. Later, after Tip/Ozma has ingested East's spells, the prison is re-opened (though it's not shown whether it was West using her own magic or Tip using East's spells to free the witches).
The Wizard: Mistress East and I, we had a partnership.
Glinda: The Prison of the Abject.
The Wizard: Yes, an unfortunate name.
    Glinda: An unfortunate prison.
    The Wizard: Wasn't my creation.
Glinda: We can't unlock it, if that's what you want.
The Wizard: So whatever magic she used to open it, I give you my permission to re-create it.
Glinda: I wish we could, but a witch's spells are her own. And there are a thousand variations. Normally, East would've had an apprentice to pass along the fruit of her tongue, but you put an end to all that, didn't you?
  • Try to Fit That on a Business Card: All the cardinal witches have an unwieldy, somewhat pompous official title. Glinda's is "Maiden of Northern Light, Mother of the Sound and Pure." West's is "Mistress of the Western Fields, Vessel of Truth and Solace," and East's was "Mistress of the Eastern Woods, Most Merciful and Stern." West lampshades this when she's being introduced publicly along with Glinda:
Herald: May I present Maiden of Northern Light, Mother of the Sound and Pure, and the Mistress of the Western Fields, Vessel Solace-
West: Yeah, yeah, Vessel, solace, truth, I spend half my life waiting to walk in and out of rooms!
