"In a few minutes, this newspaper publisher will become an obituary notice. Who killed him? Was it his sister? The editor-in-chief? The attorney? The well-connected reporter? The muckraking columnist? Or was it someone else? Match wits with Ellery Queen and see if you can guess who done it!"

  • Chekhov's Gun: Two of them - one in connection with the Dying Clue: We see several of the newspaper staff in their offices, but only one suspect entering his - complete with showing the room number on the door. Also, the second control box in the basement. While the fact that the killer had studied electrical engineering - and thus could rewire the control box to take the victim down to the basement, where he was shot, before being sent back up to be discovered - was a hint, the real Chekov's Gun with the second control box is that only one suspect was on the building's ground floor, able to shoot the victim and run up the stairs quickly enough to establish an alibi. Everyone else was out of the building or at least six floors up.
  • Dying Clue: after being shot, the victim pressed the numbers for the 5th and 6th floors, as well as the twelfth. he was trying to communicate 1265 - the room number of the killer's office.
  • Sibling Rivalry: The publisher's sister had just started a proxy fight in order to take over the newspaper and run it herself - she thought her brother was being irresponsible with the direction of the paper, and having successfully run the paper for a year by herself during the war, she resented being forced out again as soon as her brother returned. In the end, she got to run the paper herself by inheriting the paper from the murder victim.
