Recap / Eighth Doctor Adventures: Dominion

Go To

Fitz is on his way to Sam's room in the TARDIS to talk to her about the events of the previous novel before an unexpected whirlpool sucks her straight out of the TARDIS and straight out of reality. The Doctor dashes in and frantically tells Fitz that the TARDIS is being ripped apart by a some sort of dimensional rift and they land as quickly as possible before being ejected and the TARDIS locks them out. It turns out they're in Sweden, 1997, in a small town facing some mysterious goings on of its own. They explore the town and learn that people have been disappearing and that several pigs on an isolated farm have been brutally slaughtered by something inhuman. They meet Kerstin, a young woman whose boyfriend was taken from her.

Tropes present in Dominion include:

  • Alien Abduction: People begin disappearing under mysterious circumstances, including Kerstin's boyfriend Johan.
  • Attack Pattern Alpha
'Usually all I have to say to my companions is "number forty-seven" and they know what to do, but I'm going to have to explain this to you in detail...'
  • Big Damn Kiss: Contrary to the assumptions of those only acquainted with televised Who, this is the first Doctor/Male Companion kiss in the entire franchise. And ain't they wonderful?
The Doctor stood up, a look of amazement on his face, and then to Fitz’s considerable surprise he bounded over, grabbed his head and planted a kiss squarely on his lips. ‘Oh, Fitz! Fitz, Fitz, Fitz! I’m so glad you’re alive!’

Fitz staggered back, overwhelmed. ‘Glad to see you too,’ he murmured, feeling himself blushing...
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: All of the Thirri. Their species and society is similar to that of bees, with one queen who gives birth to many male offspring who play different rolls in the community, but only one female. The difference here is that the Thi'li look like humanoid amphibians.
  • Chest Burster: Happens to Johan.
  • Continuity Nod: The Doctor panics when C19 locks him up, clearly still affected by his three year stay in OBFSC.
  • Replacement Goldfish
  • Refused by the Call: The Doctor tells Kerstin she can't come with them. He says she doesn't know what she wants and that she should stay on Earth and live her life in peace. Probably healthier for her, all things considered...
