Recap / Ed Edd N Eddy S 5 E 5 Out With The Old In With The Ed

Go To

Airdate: November 18th, 2005

Summer has come to an end in Peach Creek, and the beginning of a new school year is right around the corner - despite a truly monumental effort by Eddy to avoid this reality by artificially extending summer vacation with painted leaves, replaced calendars, and an elaborate heating system. However, there is no avoiding the inevitable, and the neighborhood kids find themselves back in school, a dreaded fate for most of them, with the exception of an enthusiastic Double-D. The story is divided into two episodes, one focusing on Eddy's doomed efforts at keeping summer going, and the other on the first day of school itself.

"Out with the Old, in with the Ed" contains examples of:

  • Adults Are Useless: The Peach Creek parents once again drop the ball, as they apparently haven't said a word about school starting and haven't even bothered to take their kids shopping for school supplies, which leads to Double D being the only one prepared for it.
  • All for Nothing: Eddy goes along with Double D's secondary plan to get them in the same homeroom - which involves asking the Kankers to switch places with them - because, in the unlikely event they attend class, he'd be in the same room as them. However, later episodes show that the Kankers actually behave themselves when taking a class, meaning that Eddy could have gone along with Double D's Boring, but Practical plan without fear of being molested by the sisters.
  • An Aesop: Education is very important in a child's development.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: The episode ends with the Eds locked in the girls bathroom and forced to make out with the Kanker sisters, who successfully reneged on their deal to switch home rooms after the Eds upheld their end.
  • Bad Liar: Eddy tricks the Kids into thinking that it's still July even though two months already passed only because he painted the leaves green, redirected indoor heating systems and swiped their calendars. Only Edd, who was looking forward to school, gets suspicious that it can't still be summer. Just because the kids believed all those doesn't mean Eddy is a good liar, it means the kids really are just that stupid. His lie falls apart when a chilly autumn wind suddenly appears.
  • Believing Their Own Lies: Not only does Eddy try to trick the neighborhood into believing it’s still summer, but he actually believes he can keep summer from ending by ripping the pages from calendars, installing a chain of heat systems throughout the neighborhood and painting leaves.
  • Bigger on the Inside: Being a cartoon, Edd's briefcase has a whole filing cabinet drawer in it.
  • Boring, but Practical: In the second part of the episode, where after the Eds find out that they've been assigned to separate homerooms and Eddy asks what Double D's plan is to get them in the same homeroom, Double D explains that the proper route would be to go through school officials with signed notes from all their parents and proper notarization on the right forms, and that they'd probably get a reassignment as soon as three to four weeks.
    • On Second Thought/Oh, Crap!: After it's revealed that the Kanker sisters are assigned to the same homeroom (but claim they're going to be skipping school for most of the year), Double D explains to Ed and Eddy that they could simply trade places with the Kankers by getting them to sign a certain form. Eddy's not willing to go this far, but then Double D points out that if the Kankers ever did decide to attend any of their classes (homeroom included), Eddy would be in the same room with all three of them. Upon realizing this, he agrees to Double D's plan of switching places with the Kanker sisters.
  • Characterization Marches On: In this episode, the Kankers are depicted as delinquents who play hooky, to the point of not even remembering the last time they went to class. In later episodes taking place at school, not only do we see them attending classes regularly, but they actually don't cause trouble.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Double D is, of course, overly prepared for the start of the school year in Peach Creak—he even does a "Back to School" simulation at the beginning of the episode. This backfires on him when the kids, in a crazed frenzy, break into his house and steal everything since they haven't prepared for school themselves. He also brings Ed and Eddy a fresh set of their usual clothes to the first day of school, due to the two knocking themselves unconscious when their giant waterslide collapsed the previous evening, leading to them spending the night in the rubble in just swimsuits and don't wake up until Rolf is taking them all to school on his wagon the next morning.
  • Deal with the Devil: The Eds bargain with the Kankers to get put together in the same homeroom - amplifying the feeling of a Faustian bargain is that they do so in the boiler room, and the deal is punctuated with Lee turning up the heat in the furnace, ending with the imagery of the Kankers cackling wickedly in front of a blazing inferno.
  • Downer Ending: Much like a certain other two-part episode, this one ends with the Eds getting kissed by the Kanker sisters after being publicly humiliated, in this case being forced to call the Kanker sisters their girlfriends in front of the kids.
  • Drama Queen: Double D breaks down sobbing because he forgot the paperclips.
  • Expressive Shirt: Eddy's apron serves this function during the first half. It first says "Smooch the Cook", then when he gets angry it says "Now I'm Mad!", at another point it says "I <3 Summer!" and finally it ends up saying "School Stinks".
  • Forceful Kiss: After the Eds uphold their end of the bargain, the Kankers lock them in the girls’ bathroom and subject them to this.
  • Gaslighting: Eddy's scheme of convincing everyone it's still summer boils down to this, painting over all the leaves, using heating systems to emulate summer heat, planting recordings of bird chirps, and swiping all the calander pages from September onwards. Only Edd is convinced that things aren't as they appear to be. Nontheless, Eddy is so thorough in his efforts to hide all traces of autumn that Edd still has doubts on whether it's still summer or fall.
  • Idiot Ball: For such a smart guy who was very well-prepared for school, you'd think Edd would have the common sense to supervise Ed, whose IQ is in the negative integers, as he goes back-to-school shopping with his coupon. As a consequence, instead of any school supplies Edd is given pancake mix, a urinal, and a wooden mini-ladder. Actually, the only school supply Edd got was Ed's chewed up pencil.
  • I Reject Your Reality: Eddy absolutely refuses to admit that school is about to start and repeatedly screams out that summer wasn't over even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
  • Karma Houdini:
    • The kids receive no punishment for breaking into Double D's house and stealing his school supplies.
    • The Kankers receive no punishment for locking the Eds in the girl’s bathroom and kissing them.
  • Kick the Dog: The kids laugh at the Eds when they call the Kanker sisters their girlfriends, even though they can clearly see that the Kankers are forcing the Eds to do it.
  • Kissing Discretion Shot: Averted when Lee uses her lips to push Eddy into a stall. It's the only time a Kanker kissing an Ed is shown outside of Ed Overboard. It happens pretty fast and can be seen better if the scene is slowed down.
  • Laborious Laziness: Eddy goes the absolutely monumental effort of breaking into everyone's homes and altering their calendars, painting all the tree leaves green (and setting up a stereo system to play bird calls) and running a series of vents connected to a heater throughout the Cul-De-Sac to emulate Summer weather all just to avoid going back to school.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": Eddy tries tricking everyone into thinking that it's still summer so they won't have to get ready for the upcoming school year, getting an elaborate system of heaters spread throughout the Cul-de-Sac to emulate summer weather, and even says to Double D if summer never ends, school never starts, and that being the case, they can scam forever. But then the fall weather kicks in, the heaters all break down, and the other kids realize that the next day is the first day of school. Which leads to everyone—from laid-back Nazz to high-strung Jimmy—starts panicking about how none of them are ready for the start of the school year.
  • Minimalist Cast: We are introduced to Peach Creek Middle School, but don’t count on meeting any new characters. The closest we get is the occasional implied presence of teachers off-screen.
  • Mystery Meat: An extreme example, even for this trope; the "burgers" Eddy uses for his Summer BBQ scam at the start of the episode are carved from a tractor wheel, meaning they're actually made from hard rubber.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: Summer is over and it’s time for the kids to go back to school, which means the Eds won’t be able to do scams as much anymore.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • While he did lead the charge to steal Double D's school supplies, Rolf gives the Eds a free lift to school in his wagon.
    • Nazz is shown annoyed at Kevin for mocking Double D's love for school and smacks his hat off in response as they walk off.
  • Plot Hole: The kids freak out about school starting tomorrow, even though the next day, nobody is attending school and the first day starts after the night where Ed and Eddy are on a slip and slide.
  • Sarcasm Mode: When Ed asks if he can have Edd's hat, Edd snarks, "Oh, sure, why not! Why would I need a hat when school is now totally out of the question?!"
  • The Snack Is More Interesting: Double D manages to distract Marie and May with tater-tots while he negotiates with Lee.
  • Skewed Priorities: After Rolf knocks down Edd's door with a massive axe and the kids all stampede into his house to raid his school supplies, Edd's response is a horrified "GOOD LORD...you didn't even wipe your feet!!!"
  • Too Dumb to Live: The Eds trusting the Kanker sisters. If you remember anything about the Kanker sisters, then no in-depth explanation is required to see how stupid that is of them.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: Parodied as the Kankers dressed up as teachers before smooching the Eds.
  • Threat Backfire: At the end of the episode, after May and Marie start kissing Ed and Double D in a bathroom stall, Lee prepares to do the same to Eddy. He makes her pause for a moment by threatening to tell a teacher on her, but she quickly turns it against him, since she is dressed as a teacher, and just makes it into a flirty comment.
Eddy: (terrified) Okay, that's it! I'm telling the teacher on you!
Lee: (kneels down to him, their faces inches apart) I'm all ears, my little teacher's pet.
(Lee chuckles before shoving Eddy into the stall with a giant kiss)
  • Wham Episode: Summer is over and now, it’s time for the kids to go back to school.
  • Wham Line: "So, doesn't school like start tomorrow?"
  • Wham Shot: When Kevin sees the calendars that Eddy stole, the kids realize that it’s not summer anymore and that it’s fall.
  • Wrong Bathroom Incident: The Eds make a Deal with the Devil with the Kankers so they can be in same homeroom together. This unfortunately requires them to humiliate themselves by calling themselves the Kankers's boyfriends. After that, they get tricked by the Kankers into going into the girls' restroom where they are once again forcibly kissed by the Kankers.
