Go To

Tight End Ed is the 16th episode of Season 5 of Ed, Edd n' Eddy

In this episode, the Peach Creek Cobblers take on the Lemon Brook Lumpers in a game of football. Meanwhile, Ed has been chosen to be his team's mascot earning the love and cheers of everyone and Eddy, jealous, schemes to overshadow his friend.

Tropes

  • Artistic Licence – Sports: American football is being played incorrectly in this episode. Kevin’s team are playing both defence and offence but in the sport teams are split in two groups. One group known as the offence advance with the ball to score points while the defence stop the other side from scoring points. During the match the game is non stop which is impossible as the teams should be playing ‘downs’ to score points. Likewise it is impossible for the Lemon Brook Rumpers to score a record 64 points in a short space of time.
  • Attention Whore: Eddy is this big time in this episode. The other half of the plot is Eddy attempting to steal the spotlight from Ed who has been made mascot of his team and is jealous of his popularity. He only gets ignored and hurt in turn.
  • Brain Bleach: To Ed, seeing the Kanker Sisters' bare bellies is enough to try and pull his own eyes from his head!
  • Blatant Lies: Rolf makes a comment about him not being afraid of the Lumpers while crossing his legs and sweating like a log.
  • Bound and Gagged: Eddy is tied to the Lemon Brook Lumpers' bus and gagged with lemons in his mouth as the episode ends.
  • Butt-Monkey: Both Eddy and the Peach Creek Cobblers. Eddy keeps trying to steal Ed's spotlight but always end up at the end of pain and ignored. Good thing considering he does deserve it. The Peach Creek Cobblers on other hand were getting destroyed by the Lemon Brook Lumpers.
  • Call-Back:
    • Eddy's hammer hat as the new mascot is similar to Rolf's Hat of Discipline back from "Momma's Little Ed".
    • When Sarah sits on Edd's shoulders, he blushes furiously, a callback to his crush on Sarah in "The Ed-Touchables".
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: You think the likes of Ed, Sarah, and Rolf are strong? The Lemon Brook Lumpers are shown to be able to lift a massive weight and then proceed to punch it to dust!
  • Curbstomp Battle: The Cobblers were destroyed by the Lumpers both literally and figuratively.
  • Downer Ending: The Cobblers are utterly crushed by the Lumpers and Eddy ends up being taken away on a bus heading for Lemon Brook. Though, because of how he was in the episode, Eddy did sorta deserved it.
  • The Faceless: The Lemon Brook are never seen but their shadows are and it shows you two things: They're big and they're mean.
  • Fearless Fool: Kevin is the only one on his team that isn't afraid of the Lemon Brook Lumpers. Though this is most likely due to his status as The Ace and is also very competitive. However, this doesn't save him from getting crushed by the opposing team.
  • Getting Crap Past the Radar: After he takes care of the Kankers (who were mocking and harassing the Cobblers), Nazz takes Ed away with her for a private talk, telling him that she has “something to show him”, and the latter covers his eyes while asking what it is. Once he reunites with Edd and Eddy, Ed’s completely stunned and sweating profusely. Turns out he and Nazz were planning to make Ed the school mascot.
  • Hell Is That Noise: Whenever a Lumper is about to run over someone, a sound similar to a runaway car can be heard.
  • Hope Spot: As Eddy was being taken away by Lemon Brook, Ed manages to catch up to him with Eddy thinking he is trying to save him. Instead, Ed only shakes his hand congratulating Eddy for being promoted to their mascot.
  • Idiot Ball: As arrogant and insensitive Jerk Jock as he may be, Kevin pretty much ends up as the Only Sane Man of the episode with his usual shot at glory and attention seeking at sports shot down by everyone else being incompetent. His football team can't amount to anything:
    • Jonny and Rolf are stricken by fear against Lemon Brook while not really knowing how to handle themselves in the game.
    • Not to mention the scrawny Edd and lazy Eddy really don't have business joining a football team, given how the sport would and will crush them.
    • While Ed may be a buffoon, he was at least a powerhouse for the team, but Nazz and the Cheerleaders decide to make him a mascot instead of keeping him on the team to withstand the Lumpers.
    • Within the game, Kevin is the only one who tries while Eddy decides to upstage Ed who him and the Cheerleaders decide offering the Cobblers actual Peach Cobbler in the middle of the game is a good idea, allowing Lemon Brook to score multiple points while everyone is distracted. Unsurprisingly, Peach Creek loses hard.
  • It's All About Me: First Eddy forces his friends to join him on the football team because he thinks that he looks good in a sports uniform. Then, when he finds out that Nazz picked Ed to be their mascot, he abandons the team when the game starts in an unprompted desire to upstage Ed, unintentionally sabotaging the team and ruining school spirit.
  • Jerk Jock: Kevin acts pretty nasty to his teammates during practice (though they are incompetent like he says). The Lumpers are pretty awful as well, since they beat the gang senseless and tie Eddy to their bus.
  • Kick the Dog: The Kankers showed they have no love or respect for their own school's team even going as far to throwing large random objects at them and even calling them "losers.".
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • The Kankers showed disrespect to their own football team during practice get slammed off and sent flying from the bleachers by Ed who accidently rolls forward into them.
    • Eddy selfishly abandons his own team during a game in trying to upstage Ed as the team mascot for attention, but only gets ignored, hurt and humiliated as a result, the episode ends with the Lumpers kidnapping him by strapping him on the back of their bus and his mouth stuffed with lemons.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Nazz's attempts to raise school spirit do the opposite and while it may not have let Peach Creek win the game, she certainly made it worse by deciding to make Ed a mascot instead of keeping a powerhouse on the football team while also having the Cheer Squad make Peach Cobbler and offer it to the football team in the middle of the game which lets Lemon Brook score unopposed. Needless to say, school spirit is crushed by the end.
  • Oh, Crap!: Happens a bunch of times whenever someone is about to get crushed by a Lumper. Double D right before getting run over, Jonny before getting body slammed by another, and Rolf before getting trucked by a bunch of them.
  • Only Sane Man: Kevin is the only one who tries his best at playing and winning football. His teammates are incompetent in this sport, so his anger after losing the game by a huge margin is justifiable, even when Ed was still goofing around and trying to cheer them up in the changing room.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Ed was so nervous about him being the mascot that he actually took a shower! Both Edd and Eddy lampshade this perfectly.
Edd and Eddy: Since when does Ed shower?
  • Pet the Dog:
    • This is one of the few episodes where Sarah is actually nice to her older brother Ed. Not only is she very supportive of him being the mascot, she even hurt Eddy for trying to overshadow Ed. She's also impressed with Ed for taking out the Kankers.
    • Kevin minorly does this when he tries to build confidence for Edd.
    • May enjoys Ed's performance as the mascot (because she has a crush on him). Lee punches her for complementing him.
  • The Rival: This episode establishes the town of Lemon Brook as one to the main characters' town of Peach Creek.
  • Shadow Discretion Shot: The Lemon Brook Lumpers don't appear onscreen, their shadows being the only thing seen. Based on the appearance of said shadows, they're hulking, intimidating brutes.
  • The Snack Is More Interesting: Everyone of the Cobblers team (minus Kevin) took the time to eat some of Ed's peach cobbler during the middle of the game. Kevin had to get them to come back but it was too late as the Lumpers already scored a bunch of points.
  • Sore Loser: Kevin didn't take losing the football game well. When Ed tried to cheer everyone up, Kevin quickly shuts him up telling him to "end it now."
  • This Is Gonna Suck: As soon the Peach Creek Cobblers saw who they were up against, everyone (except Kevin) knew they were in for a world of hurt. Eddy himself almost says this trope word-for-word.
Eddy: Man this is gonna hurt!
  • Villain of the Week: For the first time ever in the series, there is a new antagonist of an episode that isn't The Kanker Sisters, Kevin, Sarah, or even Eddy. The Lemon Brook Lumpers serve as characters unique to this episode that end up destroying the Cobblers in a game of football.
  • The Worf Effect: Rolf is usually one of the stronger characters of the series being able to lift up much heavier things. In this episode, he is easily dominated by the much larger guys of the Lemon Brook Lumpers.
  • Younger Than They Look: The Lumpers are hulking, gorilla-like brutes that look like they belong on a college football team made up entirely of steroid abusers, and yet they are middle schoolers like the main characters. Lampshaded by Double D.
