Go To

After Eddy's latest scam ends in failure, Ed suddenly ends up with his own idea for a scam. Although refusing at first, Double D manages to convince Eddy to go along with it. However, as Ed's scam gets increasingly more convoluted, the duo begins to regret their decision.

Tropes

  • Actually Pretty Funny:
    • Aside from Sarah, the rest of the kids find Ed slamming a tree onto Edd and Jimmy to be rather amusing.
    • After Ed reveals he used Crocodile Tears on Eddy ("I learned that trick from Sarah."), Double D makes a visibly amused grin from realizing Ed outsmarted Eddy.
  • Agony of the Feet: Edd drops a heavy rock on his foot after being stunned into silence by Ed.
  • All for Nothing: Ed's scam ultimately doesn't accomplish anything good for the Eds. All he does is drive his friends crazy with his nonsensical orders and lack of explanations, anger the kids by stealing Jimmy's stuffed bunny, and then confuse and/or scare everyone by ripping apart said stuffed bunny to reenact a curse from his comic. This just makes the entire effort a waste since Ed realizes too late that this "scam" of his doesn't involve any cash. Though Ed is seemingly pleased by the flock of crows that appear at the end, it still results in him and his friends getting swarmed by them.
  • Borrowin' Samedi: Ed dresses Eddy as Baron Samedi for his “scam”, with a red top hat, skull painted on his face, and a picture of a pentagram hanging from his neck.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Ed calls his attempt to recreate the curse from his comic a "scam", but he apparently doesn't understand the main point of a scam is to trick kids into giving them their money. All his so-called scam does is anger the kids when he steals Jimmy's stuffed bunny and then scare them away when he enacts his "curse". His failure to understand the basics of a scam finally causes Eddy to hit his Rage Breaking Point.
Eddy: Nice "scam"! They took off! So where's the cash?
    Ed: (confused) Cash?
  • Companion Cube: Jimmy has a deep love for his brand-new stuffed bunny Mr. Yum Yum. Rolf is touched by Jimmy's affection towards a "stuffed hand cloth" and admits he also has a childhood friend he seeks comfort from to this very day, his (giant) pet clam Bobo.
  • Continuity Nod: Eddy changes into a costume in the "Masked Mumbler" porta potty from Tag Yer Ed.
  • Creepy Crows: A massive flock of crows appear seemingly out of nowhere in the ending and swarm the Eds.
  • Crocodile Tears: Ed starts sobbing when Eddy shuts down his scam. After Double D lays it on thick, Eddy begrudgingly goes through with it. Ed starts celebrating, only stopping to whisper slyly to Double D that he learned that trick from Sarah.
  • Death Glare: Sarah gives one to Eddy after Ed steals Mr. Yum Yum from Jimmy.
  • Downer Ending: Ed's scam appears to completely fail, saddening him and angering Eddy over their wasted efforts, only for the Eds to suddenly be swarmed by a horde of angry Creepy Crows, which may or may not have been the intention of Ed's curse. The kids don't get any better this episode, since Jimmy's new toy Mr. Yum Yum is destroyed by Ed in front of them all before they can get it back, and they fail to get revenge on the Eds for this due to Rolf dragging them away inside Bobo after being scared by Ed's curse.
  • Dramatic Drop: Double D does this with the rock he was holding after Ed asks him what the rock was for... after he told Double D to place it somewhere. His flabbergasted look to the question, after seeing Ed randomly eating a dog biscuit is priceless, made all the more comedic by the rock being dropped on his foot.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Kevin isn't at all impressed by Mr. Yum Yum or Jimmy's affection for him when Jimmy first introduces him to the kids. But after Ed steals Mr. Yum Yum unprovoked, Kevin joins the kids in an angry mob and is actually the first one to question Eddy about the stuffed toy's location, demanding it back.
  • Evil Laugh: Ed cackles loudly as he bites into and rips Mr. Yum Yum's stomach apart, as this is supposed to complete the curse from his comic book.
  • Funny Background Event: When Ed begins his "curse" and announces to all the kids they will "all pay with their brains", Eddy angrily asks "What are we gonna do with brains?" Double D quickly smirks at Eddy while standing next to him, while Jonny can be seen looking at Eddy in confusion from the crowd behind them.
  • Honor Before Reason: Double D trying to build confidence in Ed implementing a unique idea for a scam is what causes the latter to cause trouble with the scam, and in the end, the Eds wind up with nothing as usual.
  • I Warned You: Double D guilt slings Eddy into going through with Ed's scam. As Double D starts to slowly regret the decision, Eddy makes sure to remind him repeatedly that it was his idea.
Eddy: (bitterly) This is on your head!
(Double D angrily rasps at Eddy when his back is turned)
  • Idea Bulb: Parodied. When Ed claims he has an idea, he pulls up a mound of dirt and holds it over his head while going "boing!".
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Eddy, though he was being a total jerk about it, was right that letting Ed do his own scam was a bad idea considering what happens at the end of the episode.
Eddy: (to Double D) It's your fault. WHY DO YOU ENCOURAGE HIM?!
  • Kick the Dog: Ed steals Jimmy's toy bunny Mr. Yum Yum without explanation, and later tears him apart right in front of Jimmy.
  • Mathematician's Answer: As Ed tears apart Mr. Yum Yum as a "sacrifice" to Evil Tim, Eddy and Double D watch in confusion.
Eddy: What the heck's he doing?
Double D: Embarrassing me to no end.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: At the end of the episode, the Eds end up being swarmed by a horde of Creepy Crows. Whether or not this is because Ed attempted to reenact the curse from one of his comics or the birds migrating is left in the air; although given Rolf's panicked reaction to seeing Ed attempting to enact the curse and getting most of the kids out of the area...
  • Misplaced Retribution: After Ed steals Jimmy's stuffed rabbit, the kids beat up Eddy. Though it's quite likely they assumed Eddy was behind this scam, as is the case with most episodes.
  • Missing Steps Plan: Just how Ed planned to scam the kids out of their quarters by enacting the curse is a mystery; of course, given that it's Ed, he probably didn't think of that in the first place. Moreso with him confused when Eddy asks where’s the cash.
  • Noodle Implements: While some parts of Ed's "scam" make vague levels of sense, at least within the context of what it was supposed to accomplish (enacting a supernatural curse from a comic book), such as dressing Eddy up as a witch doctor, Ed "sacrificing" Jimmy's stuffed bunny, the mention of painting a fake Inca temple, etc., other parts make absolutely no sense even in that context; what Ed walking bent backward with a teapot on his stomach or giving Eddy a plate of pancakes has to do with summoning a curse is anyone's guess. Even Ed himself seems to forget some of it, as seen with Double D's boulder.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Edd, moments before Ed attempts to crush him in his monster disguise using a tree.
Edd: LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THAT NORTHERN DUTCH ELM!
    • Eddy, when he realizes the kids have surrounded him after Ed snatches Mr. Yum Yum away, especially when an angry Sarah comes in.
Eddy: Pancake? (Sarah pounces and beats him up) HELP ME!
    • Rolf apparently recognizes Ed's curse somehow, since he immediately panics when he sees Ed tear apart Mr. Yum Yum (or as Rolf puts it "bitten the belly of a stuffed hand cloth") and immediately declares he and all the kids must hide inside Bobo for encouragement and protection.
  • Phrase Catcher: When Kevin sees Rolf's pet clam Bobo he asks "Is that a giant clam?", then after Rolf stuffs himself and the kids in Bobo before running away in fear of Ed's curse, Double D asks "Was that a giant clam?" in the same confused tone.
  • Prank Gone Too Far: Eddy's trick on Ed that a monster was attacking ends with Double D and Jimmy being flattened by Ed with a tree.
Edd: (pulling himself out from under the tree) Ow... Is— this— what we've been reduced to?! Humiliating each other?!
  • Rage Breaking Point: Eddy starts to hit his when he arrives back at Ed's "scam" after getting mauled by Sarah. Enraged over the idiocy of the scam and how he got beat up for it, Eddy starts to strangle Ed and demands he return Jimmy's Mr. Yum Yum, while silently threatening Double D that he will get him for this. He officially hits it when Ed makes it clear he wasn't fully aware they were supposed to take the kids' money, causing him to scream in anger and shout at Double D for encouraging Ed.
  • Real After All: The ending implies the curse was real after all.
  • Running Gag: Double D's growing confusion when Ed tells him to place a rock "on the X", despite Ed painting a "Q" on the ground. He is very much confused at there being dozens of Qs written all over the place.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: After Jimmy introduces his new teddy named Mr. Yum Yum, Kevin sarcastically warns him to keep his toy away from Jonny otherwise he will eat it (due to Jonny having gotten Kevin's football stuck in his mouth earlier), with Jimmy taking the sarcasm seriously.
  • Shout-Out: The ending is a reference to Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Rolf seems to recognize Ed's ritual as a curse and bolts with the other kids.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Sandwich:
    • When Ed calls for a lunch break, Eddy only manages a single bite from a sandwich, and Double D doesn’t get the chance to eat it before the break is suddenly declared over.
    • For some unexplained reason, Ed's scam involves Eddy holding a huge stack of pancakes. Ed simply tells Eddy to wait for his signal but doesn't explain what he's supposed to do when given it, thus abandoning him to the kids while holding the pancakes. Jonny asks Eddy if he's going to finish them, apparently wanting some. Eddy can only sheepishly offer them when it’s clear he’s about to be attacked. They all go to waste when Sarah does indeed attack Eddy, thinking he was involved with Mr. Yum Yum's kidnapping.
  • Tickle Torture: When the kids arrive to try to get back Jimmy's stuffed bunny that Ed stole, Jonny suggests they tickle the Eds until they wet their pants.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Eddy reluctantly agrees to go along with Ed's scam, despite knowing nothing good will come of it. As Edd in turn quickly starts to realise this might not end well, Eddy lets him know that he's to blame if things go south.
  • Tom the Dark Lord: The villain from Ed's comic book (the one whose curse he's trying to recreate) is named "Evil Tim".
  • What the Hell, Hero?: After being left to be beaten by Sarah, Eddy berates Ed for stealing Mr. Yum Yum and demands he give it back to Jimmy. He also rips into Edd for encouraging Ed's scam in the first place.
  • "X" Marks the Spot: Said by Ed to Double D, as he wants him to put rocks on the X… except he painted a Q on the ground instead.
