Recap / Ed Edd N Eddy S 3 E 20 Ed Pass It On

Go To

Sick of always being disrespected by the other kids, Eddy spreads a rumor that his brother is coming home and everyone believes it.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Accidental Truth: Subverted. It seems like Eddy's brother really did come home, but it was actually Sarah and Jimmy in disguise.
  • An Aesop:
    • Don’t lie or spread rumors to get attention. People will catch on eventually, and the repercussions will be bad once they do.
    • There’s a difference between being respected and being feared.
    • People will get suspicious if you deceive them, and that becomes more likely if Gossip Evolution occurs and distorts your original lie into something you can't control.
  • Arc Number: Sarah and Jimmy wear a vest with the number 62 on it as part of their Eddy's Brother disguise. This is the same shirt he wears when we finally see him in the series finale.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: After Sarah claims brothers are stupid Eddy retorts telling her to say it to his face, to which Sarah responds "Okay, so where's his face?" Eddy is left speechless by this question.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When it seems like Ed has clearly caught Sarah and Jimmy posing as Eddy's brother in plain sight, he's really just asking what kind of ice cream they wanted on the sundae, and all Sarah has to do is disguise her voice again.
  • Didn't Think This Through: While pulling off a restaurant, Edd and Eddy leave Ed in charge of cooking duties. It goes about as well as expected.
    • Spreading the rumor about Eddy's brother coming home might have worked for a while, but Eddy later realizes that the “little fib” wouldn’t last long as people begin questioning when is he coming.
  • The Dreaded: Eddy's brother. While Edd, Sarah, and Jimmy never met him at all and Ed, Nazz, and Jonny didn't know him personally, Eddy, Kevin, and Rolf are terrified of him.
  • Dreadful Musician: Nazz is such a bad yodeler that her yodeling shatters a vase, several glasses and Ed.
  • Facepalm: Edd does one when Kevin lets Eddy go to his house.
  • Foreshadowing: This episode hints about the conclusion of the movie:
    • A big hint towards Eddy's brother mistreating him is that when he thinks he sees his brother on his doorstep, Eddy's reaction is one of absolute terror.
    • When Eddy announces to Kevin that his brother is coming home, Kevin starts sweating profusely and high-tails it on his bike.
Edd: That wasn't respect, Eddy! What I witnessed was fear.
    • Notably, the only people who don't react with terror upon hearing that Eddy's brother is coming home are the people who don't seem to have ever actually met him.
    • Jonny and Plank, who for some reason aren’t at Kevin’s house, foreshadows them arriving too late to the amusement park, and replacing the Eds as outsiders by the end of the movie. Interestingly enough, in the episode itself, they even state they're "loners".
  • Glass-Shattering Sound: Nazz's really bad yodeling, which breaks several objects, including drink glasses, a vase and Ed.
  • Gossip Evolution: Eddy's initial attempts to gain respect starts by simply saying that his brother is coming home today, while goading Kevin's imagination by implying that the rumors about him are true. Kevin, after being intercepted, ends up passing this along to Jonny, who passes things along to the next kid, and the next kid, and so on. By the time Eddy and the others hear about the rumor again, Nazz has interpreted it to mean that Eddy's Brother is gonna go rock climbing with her.
    • Edd points out that this situation is becoming very dangerous, that the gossip is getting very out of control and that it would come back to bite Eddy in the ass...which it does when Sarah ends up questioning Eddy about where exactly his brother is. Eddy struggles to come up with a plausible answer, and only barely averts getting his ass kicked for his deception by claiming his brother wouldn't be here until tomorrow due to missing the bus. As Edd frankly notes near the end of the episode, Eddy is only delaying the inevitable when the kids figure out they've been had.
  • Green Around the Gills: Jimmy looks like he's about to throw up after the Eds' restaurant scam fails. Then again, seeing Ed naked while pretending to be a turkey and pouring gravy on himself would do that to anyone...
  • Idiot Ball:
    • Eddy thinks the figure in front of him is his brother and yet doesn't recognize Sarah's voice and skinny neck.
    • While Ed sees Sarah and Jimmy out of the disguise and still thinks they're Eddy's brother.
  • Misspelling Out Loud: "R-E-S-P-E-E-K, respect."
  • Naked People Are Funny: Ed, you were supposed to use a real turkey!!
    Ed: Stuffing, anyone?
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently Eddy's brother did something to Rolf's chickens that made Rolf hide them away so desperately here.
  • Spotting the Thread: When Sarah and Jimmy disguised as Eddy's brother demand a sundae, Eddy reminds "his brother" that he's lactose intolerant. He's threatened into getting the sundae anyway.
  • Totem Pole Trench: What appears to be Eddy's brother is just Sarah standing on Jimmy's shoulders.
  • Trauma Button: Sarah in the Eddy's brother disguise bunching her fist could be one for Eddy as after he reminds "his brother" that he's lactose intolerant he's out of the house in a manner of seconds after "his brother" threatens him.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Jonny and Plank were strangely the only ones not at Kevin’s house despite learning Eddy’s brother is ‘returning home’.
