"They were dumped off by a tornado, and raised by field mice... in a cave, near the construction site. And they eat their weight in cheese, and they throw comfortable armchairs through the air."

Thanks to a scam gone wrong, the Eds send an armchair flying into Kevin's window. Eddy makes up the story of the Mucky Boys to avoid a pounding. No sooner does Eddy tell this lie than the whole neighborhood hears about it.

Tropes

  • An Aesop: Lying will only make things worse for you.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Edd tells Eddy that they should just tell Kevin the truth about breaking his window, but Eddy retorts that if they do so, then Kevin will beat them up.
  • Cartoon Throbbing: To make fake Mucky Boys footprints, Eddy smashes Ed's bare feet with a mallet, causing them to swell up to three times their size.
  • Characterization Click Moment: Edd starts to pick up some of his later traits such as being the Voice of Reason and the Only Sane Man and snarking after Eddy ignores him (or can't hear him, in this case). Oddly enough, he still has his low, raspy Season 1 voice even though this episode aired after "Tag Yer Ed", which began his Vocal Evolution.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Edd lampshades in the end that the Eds could've avoided being stuck in a cement block if they'd only told Kevin the truth in the first place.
  • Death Glare:
    • Kevin gives a furious glare to the Eds when it is revealed they were the so-called "mucky boys" and were the ones who really destroyed his window and tricked him and the others with their performance.
    • When Jonny arrives to see the Eds trapped in cement and comments to Plank that "Kevin was telling the truth", unknowingly echoing what Double D had been telling Eddy to do all episode, Double D shoots an annoyed glare at Eddy. It actually causes Eddy to flinch a bit.
  • Downer Ending: The Eds completely bring this down on themselves for lying to Kevin about destroying his window.
  • Hypocritical Humor: "YOU HAVE GOT THE BIGGEST MOUTH!"
  • In One Ear, Out The Other: Ed puts a bone through both ears. Later, Eddy sticks his whole arm through Ed's ears.
  • Jail Bake: Jonny gives the Eds a cake with a hammer hidden inside. Too bad Ed just shoves his face into the cake and the hammer ends up stuck to the side of his face.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Even though this episode seems to have a Downer Ending, remember it was the Eds (technically Ed and Eddy) that lied about accidentally breaking Kevin's window and deserved to be trapped in concrete. Sure, Double D was trying to be in the right by wanting to tell Kevin the truth and didn't directly cause any of the damage, but he still (reluctantly, of course) went along with Eddy's plan to be the "Mucky Boys."
  • Maintain the Lie: Instead of telling the truth to Kevin on who broke the window Eddy makes up a lie about the "Mucky Boys" being responsible. But when he finds out Kevin has gathered several other kids to go hunting for the Mucky Boys, Eddy realizes it is only a matter of time before they find out they don't exist and decides to keep the lie going despite Double D constantly telling him to just tell the truth. It does not end well for him.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: The Eds could have gotten away with their "Mucky Boys" scheme had Ed not given himself away when Sarah called for him. Granted, the latter still saw right through the Eds' disguises anyways, but still, Ed makes no effort to deny his own identity.
  • Oh, Crap!: After Kevin realizes that the Eds were the Mucky Boys, the Eds had this expression when they knew pain was coming their way.
  • Only Sane Man: Sarah. She is the only one that isn't fooled by the Mucky Boys and quickly manages to expose the Eds as them.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: The "Mucky Boys" are literally just the Eds covered in mud and somehow, this fools everyone except for Sarah. Sarah easily saw through their disguises the moment she first saw them and manages to trick her brother Ed into revealing themselves to the other kids.
  • Pet the Dog: Jonny at least tries to help out the Eds by giving them a hammer in a cake in order to escape the block of concrete. Unfortunately, it gets stuck to Ed's face and he thinks it's a tarantula.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Kevin was already upset that his window was broken but once it was revealed that the Eds were indeed the cause (especially when they scared him earlier as the "Mucky Boys"), Kevin stood there fuming in rage which eventually lead to him trapping the Eds in a block of concrete.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Everyone (sans Sarah) upon seeing the "Mucky Boys".
Kevin: You guys owe me a window! I'm gone!
Rolf: I must water the weeds!
  • "Scooby-Doo" Hoax: Interestingly it's the main characters who are trying to pull this off. Ultimately it unravels thanks to Sarah.
  • Spotting the Thread: Sarah starts to suspect something while exploring "the Mucky Boy's cave". She finds the paint can on the floor and checks the "cave paintings" seeing that it is still wet.
  • Wallpaper Camouflage: The Eds hide from the kids by covering themselves in paint and posing as cave paintings. It somehow works.
