Recap / Earth: Final Conflict S2E5 "Moonscape"

Go To

While meeting with a Russian scientist in Moscow to buy some Taelon-related tech, Augur is arrested by Russian state security, convicted of high treason (apparently, Taelons are considered to be a national treasure in Russia, so any crime related to them is punished severely) and sentenced to be executed the following day. Augur's AI contacts Liam, and Liam learns that Augur was offered a single chance to avoid death by joining a secret Taelon project to create enhanced human soldiers to fight Jaridians. He meets a man named Lazarus, who claims to be the first successful test subject of the program. Augur undergoes the initial stages of the implantation, which includes boosting his aggressive impulses. Da'an inspects the project and find sit abhorrent. He meets Lazarus and realizes that his implants are breaking down. He also suspects they have a connection. Lazarus manages to break through his programming and restore his original self. He gets the Russian scientist to reprogram the Mothership's virtual glass to fail, which threatens everyone on the ship. Lazarus helps Liam get Augur to return to sanity. Augur fixes the virtual glass. Lazarus tries to kill Zo'or but is shot by Sandoval and dies in front of Liam, who wonders who Lazarus was and how he knew Da'an and Augur.

Meanwhile, Maiya runs into Sandoval and initially assumes him to be her late husband Jason until she spots his Skrill and realizes her mistake. Intrigued, he asks if she wants to take a walk with him. After a while, she runs off. He asks Lily to find out who she is, including analyzing the hair follicles he managed to get from her. Lily is angry with her jeopardizing the Liberation like that. Maiya suggests that this world may have a Doppelgänger of her. Lily runs a facial scan and finds a woman named Isabel Martinez. Maiya reveals that Lily'a doppelganger Kayla was her sister, so it's possible that Isabel is Lily's sister. Lily tells Sandoval that Isabel's work can take her anywhere in the world, and she usually works with primitive tribes, away from civilization.

  • Armor-Piercing Question: After learning about Zo'or's project, Da'an is firmly against de-evolving humans to primitive killing machines. He points out to Zo'or that he himself has de-evolved into an Atavus and doesn't wish the same fate on humans. Zo'or initially concedes that uplifting humans to the spiritual level of the Taelons in order to join with them is the better approach... and then asks Da'an who is going to protect them from the Jaridians. Da'an doesn't have an answer.
  • Doppelgänger: Lily runs a facial scan on Maiya and finds a woman named Isabel Martinez, who looks identical to Maiya.
  • Fighting from the Inside: Da'an helps Lazarus restore his former self, and Lazarus helps Liam get Augur to fight against the aggression enhancement.
  • Mysterious Past: It's never revealed who Lazarus was before becoming a test subject in the program. Zo'or had his original memories erased. Lazarus is able to restore some of them, enough to know he has a connection to both Da'an and Augur. He dies before Liam can find out the truth.
  • Never Trust a Title: No one escapes from the Moon here. In fact, the word "moon" isn't even mentioned once in the episode.
  • Super-Soldier: Zo'or's project is meant to put human "volunteers" through mental and physical enhancements that turn them into soldiers capable of taking on Jaridians. Da'an is appalled at the low survival rate (5 out of 20), while Zo'or considers it acceptable. The enhancements include boosted aggression. Augur is one such "volunteer", who undergoes the initial stages of the enhancements.
  • Trauma Button: Lazarus begins to have flashbacks of his enhancement procedures and fighting fellow "volunteers". Da'an realizes that Lazarus's implants are beginning to break down.
