Recap / Duck Dodgers S 1 E 9

Go To

After accidentally getting his hands on a Green Lantern ring and suit, Dodgers becomes the only one who can save the Green Lantern Corps from Sinestro.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Adapted Out: Ganthet is the only Guardian of the Universe to appear in the episode, while Kyle Rayner is oddly the only human Green Lantern Corps member who existed at the time who isn't represented.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Even putting aside this being before he was made into a Well-Intentioned Extremist, Sinestro is still far more evil than his comic counterpart, attempting to destroy the universe and recreate it with himself as the ruler.
  • Affably Evil: Overlooking his plan Sinestro is a pretty friendly guy, him and Dodgers speaking amicably with each other.
  • Age Lift: Sinestro, Hal Jordan, and almost all of their fellow contemporaries in the Green Lantern Corps were Modern Age people born generally in the 20th century. In this version, they are all living in the 24th century.
  • Big "NO!": Kilawog lets out one when Tomar-Re is captured. Later, Sinestro lets out two - one when Dodgers frees the Corps, and one when he is sent through his own vortex.
  • Brick Joke: Early in the episode, Dodgers suspends the Eager Young Space Cadet from a flagpole by his underwear. At the end of the episode, the Cadet is still hanging there.
  • The Cameo: Hal Jordan briefly appears at the end to reclaim his ring and uniform.
  • Character Witness: Ganthet serves as this to Dodgers when the other Lanterns accuse him of being an agent of Sinestro, by saying that if Dodgers HAD been an agent of Sinestro, he would not have saved Ganthet from being crushed.
  • Crossover Power Acquisition: It's what set the plot in motion. Dodgers acquires a Green Lantern Power Ring through a laundromat mix-up, and becomes a Green Lantern.
  • Disney Death: Upon seeing Dodgers' empty suit, the other Lanterns believe that Dodgers has been crushed to death. It turns out he just slipped out of the suit.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite Dodgers' selfishness, he still refuses to side with Sinestro's offers if it means killing the Green Lantern Corps and destroying the universe.
  • Friendly Enemy: Sinestro is quite polite and chatty with Dodgers despite trying to kill him.
  • Hand-or-Object Underwear: At the end of the episode, Dodgers falls out of his Green Lantern uniform and covers himself with his hands before Hal Jordan returns and uses his reclaimed ring to restore Dodgers' apparel.
  • Karmic Jackpot: Dodgers saves Ganthet's life. When the rest of the Green Lanterns suspect Dodgers of working for Sinestro, Ganthet defends Dodgers, pointing out that while Dodgers is an idiot, he's not evil, as an underling of Sinestro would never have saved Ganthet.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Dodgers hangs the Cadet from a flagpole by his underwear. At the end of the episode when Dodgers is left in Sinestro's base after Hal Jordan takes his ring back, he's stranded but figures the Cadet will come for him. The episode then cuts back to the Cadet saying not to bet on it.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Sinestro's Evil Plan is to destroy and recreate the universe with himself as the ruler.
  • Pet the Dog: While it was his fault in the first place, Dodgers does use his Green Lantern Ring to save a dog from falling off a building. Later he saves Ganthet from being crushed by a crumbling building.
  • Satanic Archetype: Sinestro, as usual. This incarnation of him looks more devilish than usual. Dodgers even points the resemblance out upon meeting Sinestro face to face.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The episode itself is a shout-out to Green Lantern, and a shot of the captured members of Green Lantern Corps has a brief cameo of what appears to be Mortal Kombat's Raiden.
    • Dodgers refers to Ganthet as "Papa Smurf" and Ch'p as "Alvin".
  • Silence, You Fool!: Said word for word by Sinestro when he grows tired of Dodgers rambling.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Ch'p, Katma Tui and Tomar Re are depicted as still-living members of the Green Lantern Corps, when in the comics they had been killed off years ago.
  • Team Member in the Adaptation: Green Lambkin from the Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew! in-universe comic Justa Lotta Animals appears among the cameos of Green Lantern Corps members in the episode, when in the comics he wasn't an inhabitant of the same universe as the regular Green Lantern Corps, let alone affiliated with them.
  • The Unintelligible: Ch'p only speaks in chipmunk squeaks.
  • We Can Rule Together: The episode explores a certain direction the trope doesn't ordinarily cover.
Sinestro: There may even be a place for someone like you in my new reality. Join forces with me... or be obliterated.
    Dodgers: Okay.
Sinestro: Don't be such a sanctimonious fool! You don't realise the -- did you say "okay"?
Dodgers: Yeah, sounds good to me. Ground floor of the new cosmic order, baby!
    Sinestro: Really?
Dodgers: Oh, wait, you had the whole hero-villain seduction speech worked up, didn't'cha?
Sinestro: No, no! Well, maybe a little. You see, most heroes aren't so easily swayed.
Dodgers: Then sway me, Jackson. Sway me.
