Recap / Dragons The Nine Realms S 7 E 1 Hobs And Saw

Go To

While D'Angelo has to deal with his father's disapproval of his work as an animal vet as well as a wounded Hobgobbler, the other riders plan to sneak into Buzzsaw's camp to retake the Book of Dragons.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Badass in Distress: Chief Baker, a former army ranger, gets cornered by the Speed Stinger and needs to be saved by the Hobgobbler and D'Angelo.
  • "Be Quiet!" Nudge: A Running Gag throughout the first half of the episode is Eugene making a Jerkass remark and someone else, usually Jun or Alex, punching him in the arm for it. At one point, he does it to himself after realizing one of his comments was too mean.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: D'Angelo calls his father out on banning dragons from Rakke Town because he is disappointed his son wants to be an animal vet instead of an army vet, thereby putting his own wishes over those of his son.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: When Chief Baker tries to fight the Speed Stinger, he gets knocked down and cornered immediately.
  • Did Not Think This Through: After Chief Baker puts the wounded Hobgobbler outside the house causing it to run off, D'Angelo reminds his father the dragon is injured and thus easy prey. His father admits he didn't think of that.
  • Genre Savvy: When Alex agrees to Tom's proposal under the condition they get out when things go south, Eugene points out that Tom's plans always go south.
  • Inexplicable Cornered Escape: Downplayed. When Ford looks at the spot behind the tree where Tom is hiding, he is suddenly gone. However, after he leaves, it's revealed Tom simply moved further to the side, still hiding behind the same tree.
  • It's a Long Story: When Jun asks Tom why he has so many standees of himself, he tells her that they are his mom's and invokes this trope.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: When Eugene blames Tom again for giving the Book of Dragons to Buzzsaw, despite having done it to save Thunder, he claims Tom wants to do the raid on Buzzsaw's camp to clear his conscience. Tom's subsequent guilty expression as well as the fact he tells the riders "I need this" when trying to convince them to do the raid even without D'Angelo shows that Eugene was right.
  • Offscreen Rebuilding: Rakke Town was burned down in the season 6 finale. This episode is set a few weeks later and there are no signs of damage to any of the buildings.
  • Parents Are Wrong: Chief Baker is dismissive of his son's dream of becoming an animal vet as well of his dragon hospital calling both a "waste of time." However, when the Hobgobbler D'Angelo took in as a patient saves his life and when D'Angelo manages to tame the Speed Stinger which was hunting them by treating its wound, Chief Baker sees the error of his ways.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: D'Angelo and his mom use theirs to convince Chief Baker to let the Hobgobbler stay.
  • Skyward Scream: Whenever the Hobgobbler messes something up, Chief Baker raises his fists into the air and shouts his son's name.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Alex is NOT happy Tom intentionally didn't invite D'Angelo to the meeting and even less that he wants to attack Buzzsaw without D'Angelo.
  • Would Hurt a Child: While shooting arrows at Tom, Ford shoots one arrow right at his head, grinning while doing so. If Thunder hadn't destroyed it, it would have killed Tom.
