Recap / Dragons The Nine Realms S 5 E 3 Barrel Of Vine Tails

Go To

Tom finds a clue about his ancestor's final resting place in the Nature Realm. However, in the Nature Realm, the Book of Dragons is stolen by a group of Vinetails, gliding dragons which behave similar to monkeys. They lure the Riders into a group of carnivorous plants in order to use them to get to a tree. As the Riders can't escape on their own, Tom makes a deal with the Vinetails promising them to create a permanent path in return for their help. After the situation is dealt with, the Riders discover that the "final resting place" refers to a chair Tom's ancestor used to sit on. Back home, Olivia reveals to Tom that his great-grandfather was a Haddock.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Generation Xerox: With The Reveal that Tom is a descendant of Hiccup, Tom becomes this having previously befriended a member of the Nightfury-family of dragons and founded a team of Dragon Riders protecting dragons from dragon hunters who want to misuse them for their own goals, just like his ancestor Hiccup.
  • Lineage Comes from the Father: Implied to be an Inverted example. Since Olivia specifically called out her great-grandfather as a Haddok rather than any of her grandparents or parents, it's likely her great-grandfather only had daughters resulting in the name being lost. Thus, her relation to Hiccup would come from her grandmother.
  • Man-Eating Plant: The carnivorous plants the Vinetails lure the group into have evolved to prey on dragons, even those as big as Wu and Wei.
  • Not Quite Flight: Unlike other dragons, the Vinetails don't fly. Rather, they glide through the air like dracos
  • The Reveal: Tom and Olivia are indeed descendants of Hiccup.
  • Secret Legacy: Tom learns that he is the descendant of Hiccup, the protagonist from the How to Train Your Dragon-movies and the Dragons: Riders of Berk-series.
  • Wham Episode: Tom is revealed to be Hiccup's descendant.
