Recap / Dragons Riders Of Berk S 8 E 5 A Gruff Separation

Go To

Gruffnut returns to the Edge to deliver the Thorston Rite of Passage, three dangerous trials for the Thorston's coming of age ritual. However, only one of the twins can become a Thorston, leaving Ruff and Tuff to compete for the honor.

Tropes:

  • Black Sheep: Gruffnut is revealed to be one within the Thorston family; Agnut reveals that not only is he not authorized to administer the trials, but that he's not even a true Thorston, because he failed his own trials.
  • Continuity Nod: At one point, Tuffnut is seen putting Chicken’s clutch of chicks from "Searching For Oswald... and Chicken" through an obstacle course.
  • Mistaken for Terrorist: The episode opens with Hiccup flying onto Gruffnut’s ship and demanding he show himself, thinking he was a dragon hunter hoping to sneak onto the Edge.
  • Mystery Box: Just as Gruffnut tries to get away with the treasure chest he had the twins get for him, Hiccup and Toothless stop him, still suspecting him of something underhanded… only to reveal that it was full of rocks. Subverted, as there really was something valuable in it: a dragon eye lens hidden in a secret compartment.
  • Rite of Passage: The Thorston Induction Trials are a rite of passage Thorstons partake in on their nineteenth birthday (because most Thorstons don’t live that long) where they have to do three impressive and dangerous challenges (outrun a wildfire, catapult themselves and catch a Terrible Terror, bowling for sheep with boars, etc.) thought up by the High Council of Thorstons.
    • Apparently the Jorgenson Induction Trials are set when they are nine months of age, with the inductee having to kill a bear. Considering it is Snotlout making such claims, it is likely that he is just exaggerating to make himself more impressive.
  • Secret Test of Character: Gruffnut claims that he told the twins that only one of them can earn the Thorston name to test if they'd put each other before winning the contest, which they end up doing. However, it's subverted as Gruffnut had no authority over the trials and was only using them to get the treasure.
  • Uncanny Family Resemblance: In addition to Gruffnut, several other Thornstons in the training montage look identical save hair color. Agnut, who appears at the end to give the real trial, looks like a redheaded Ruffnut.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Fishlegs and Meatlug spend half of the day planning the twins' birthday party, only for the twins to torch and criticize the decorations.
  • Worthless Yellow Rocks: Gruffnut discovers another dragon eye lens, but he just thinks it's a piece of glass.
