When Heather goes to see a man who claims to have seen Oswald alive, she walks into a trap, and the Riders are forced to pay a heavy price.
Tropes:
- Badass in Distress: Heather and Krogan duel, and even with her skill, she has little chance against his brute strength combined with skill.
- The Bad Guy Wins: The Dragon Hunters get the lens and Johann plays everyone for chumps.
- Big Damn Heroes: Heather looks set to die alongside Windshear at the bottom of the ocean after the key to her cage fails to work. Then in comes Dagur and Sleuther to save the pair of them.
- Bluff the Imposter: Heather uses this to out her supposed contact, confirming it is a trap set by Krogan.
- Character Tics: The chicken-feed vendor clucks and croons like a chicken at random.
- Dramatic Irony: The audience now knows Johann is a villain, but none of the characters do yet.
- The Ending Changes Everything: When the first episode of Race to the Edge season 1 aired, it looked like Hiccup found the Dragon Eye purely by chance while searching for Dagur, setting the plot of the next five seasons in motion entirely by accident. This season's finale changes the nature of this episode's plot completely by revealing Johann, rather than being an accidental victim, engineered the whole thing, as he was deliberately using Hiccup the whole time to find the Dragon Eye (and, by extension, the King of Dragons). The discovery of the Dragon Eye was no accident of the hero's but a deliberate plan of the villain's.
- Evil All Along: Johann. He even rants about how hard it was for him having to be "friends" with the likes of Stoick the Vast and Hiccup for so long, spending so many years building up a trustworthy reputation and false persona, etc.
- Failed a Spot Check: As it turns out, the Dragon Eye Lens-like object Heather wears on her belt is in fact a Dragon Eye Lens. Everyone who has this fact pointed out to them is baffled that they never noticed sooner
- Internal Reveal: Heather finds out that Oswald died on Vanaheim aiding the Sentinels.
- Popcorn on the Cob: Snotlout throws the bag of "Archipelago Gold" at Krogan, whose dragon immediately blasts. It explodes into popcorn, providing a brief distraction.
- Tan Lines: After Snotloot trades his usual clothes for the bag of "Archipelago Gold", his arms are shown to be paler where he usually wears bracers.
- Wham Shot: The Man Behind the Man is revealed to be Johann, who has been searching for something known as the King of Dragons, and needed the Berserker Dragon Eye lens to find it.
