Astrid has come down with a deadly disease called the Scourge of Odin, and the only cure is the saliva of a Buffalord, a dragon that has supposedly been hunted to extinction.

- Be Careful What You Wish For: Viggo found the Buffalord. He takes it, and thus Astrid, hostage in order to stop Hiccup from attacking him. Hiccup allows him to leave with it after getting the cure, knowing that the Buffalord will cause more trouble for Viggo than he could. It proceeds to prove uncontainable, and wrecks the dragon hunter's ship in the process. Viggo and Ryker are forced to let it loose, and then their ship sinks anyway.
- Bridal Carry: Hiccup catches a sickened Astrid this way when she faints, and does this again after she falls off of Stormfly.
- Carrying the Antidote: Viggo hopes to capture the Buffalord and create a Scourge of Odin outbreak so he can make a fortune selling the cure.
- Cool Shades: Hiccup makes himself a pair of light-dimming goggles by using Death Song amber.
- Didn't See That Coming: While being confident in his victory, Viggo wasn't expecting the Buffalord to be able to break through his dragon proof cage.
- Dramatic Irony: Hiccup can't figure out how Viggo also found the Buffalord, due to not knowing about the Flightmare mist bypass.
- Find the Cure!: And Viggo is looking for it, too.
- Fluorescent Footprints: Hiccup illuminates the Buffalord's tracks using Flightmare algae.
- Jump Scare: Astrid, already shaken from discovering the room full of Scourge victims, gets a nastier shock when one of them unexpectedly and desperately grabs her arm.
- Incurable Cough of Death: Astrid has this chronic symptom of the Scourge throughout the episode not long after getting scratched. She gets better after Hiccup gives her the proper version of the Buffalord's antidote.
- Magic Antidote: The antidote works on Astrid almost instantly.
- No Plans, No Prototype, No Backup: Subverted; although the Dragon Eye has been lost, Fishlegs has more than enough notes and illustrations that he can find information about the Buffalord as if they still had it.
- Ship Tease: Hiccup at one point says to a sick Astrid, "I can't imagine a world without you in it." At the end, Astrid tells Hiccup the same thing in response to the fact that she would have done what Hiccup had done for her if he had been in the same situation she had been in, showing how much the two have grown to care for each other.
- Viking Funeral: The group hold one for the fishing boat full of Scourge victims partly out of respect, and partly to contain the outbreak.
