Season 1, Episode 11:

Clear World

The development of glassworks, an important step for making sulfa drugs and for chemistry as a whole, turns out to have a surprising benefit for Suika.

Feats of Science:

  • The pinhole effect. Why Suika's watermelon mask helps her see.
  • Clear glass. Easy, just add lead.
  • Glasses. Polished on a bamboo lathe.
  • Chemistry set.

Tropes:

  • Blind Without 'Em: Suika and Kinro. Poor depth perception holds back Kinro's fighting ability.
  • Breaking the Bonds: When Chrome brings a tied-up Kaseki to the lab and shows him glassblowing, Kaseki gets so excited that he explodes out of his bonds.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The low-quality glassworks are coiled up like the turd emoji.
  • Call a Rabbit a "Smeerp": Suika calls her nearsightness the "fuzzy sickness".
  • Correction Bait: Senku needs knowledge of glassblowing, which has been lost for 3700 years. So he gets his friends to tie up the craftsman Kaseki and forces him to watch his failed attempts at glassblowing. Soon enough, Kaseki is infuriated enough to burst free from his ropes and show Senku how it's done... even though up until now, he had no idea what glass even was (even though he doesn't know precisely what glass is, he has enough general knowledge of crafting that can transfer over to glassblowing).
  • The World Is Just Awesome: When Suika can see sunflowers clearly for the first time.
