Recap / Dr. Crafty Season 4 Month 2: Season 4 Commission Month

Go To

Airing Range: 6/4/2021 - 6/25/2021

With the festivities out of the way, the Crafty Crew touches upon a third set of commissions for this next month. Like previous Commission Months, whatever the Crew works on is up to the commissioners' mercy. Unlike the previous Commission Months, however, #3 is more thematically cohesive, covering works with a dark theme throughout most of its episodes, while also discussing Sailor Moon during the rest.

Tropes Applicable to the Month as a whole:

Main Show E79: "Is That a Castlevania Reference?"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/79.jpeg
Air Date: 6/4/2021

Crafty and Nurse's first task is a group commission of various Castlevania characters. They discuss the series and its conceptual history.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Continuity Nod: Alucard—the one from Hellsing, not Castlevania—returns, still fuming about his loss to Dio in their Death Debate. Crafty suddenly shuts him up by whipping him with the Vampire Killer, causing Alucard to burst into flames like an enemy from the first Castlevania game.

Chara-Cafe E14: "Dog Days"

Air Date: 6/2/2021

Still struggling without her oven, Pepper has to rely on buying pre-baked goods from stores to tide herself and Crafty over. When Crafty assumes she made some store-bought cookies herself, Pepper tries to uphold the lie, but it won't be long before he finds out the truth thanks to today's dog detective concoction...

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Insane Troll Logic: The discussion of who constitutes as a furry soon summons Jedah. Through some strange wordplay, he's able to stand his ground and contribute his argument before Crafty can do anything.
[Jedah appears in a puff of fire.]
Jedah: Now, hold your horses! Are we talking about definitions in this court of law?
Crafty: Well, there isn't really any law being discussed here, and... pretty sure this isn't a courtroom.
Jedah: Actually, by technicality, tennis courts count!
Crafty: This isn't a tennis court, eithe—
    Jedah: My serve!
[Jedah summons a tennis racket and swats Crafty out of the room with it.]
Jedah: Fifteen love! Now, where was I...?
  • Reset Button: To give Pepper her oven back, Crafty reveals an actual reset button that lets him retcon one single thing on the show. The detective concoction warns him that this button could have much better uses, but Crafty uses it for the oven anyways.
    Detective: Idiots...
  • What the Hell, Hero?: When the detective concoction deduces that Pepper's cookies were store-bought, Crafty asks why she would lie to him. Pepper finally calls him out for not listening to her about the broken oven. She didn't have the heart to tell him before, but now, she feels that she has no choice. Crafty gladly makes up for his mistakes by literally retconning the oven back into existence.

Main Show E80: "Gotham Girls Night"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/80_3.jpeg
Air Date: 6/11/2021

The next group commission involves redesigning the three most popular ladies in the Gotham City Rogues Gallery.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Art Shift: To help set the tone for the subject matter, the intro skit starts out with a noir visual filter. Supporting the visual shift is some downbeat jazz music in the background and a radio filter placed over Crafty and Nurse's voices.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: After the art is completed, Nurse realizes that Stylene would've been perfect for redesigning the Gotham Rogues Gallery ladies, and she wonders why she didn't help out. Crafty explains that Stylene had a prior engagement—which, as it turns out, is a date with the Penguin.
[Stylene and the Penguin are in a fancy restaurant, and Stylene looks less than pleased with what she sees.]
The Penguin: Okay, so... I know I don't look exactly like my Tinder profile picture...
    [Stylene Facepalms in embarrassment.]
  • invoked First Installment Wins: Crafty believes that Harley Quinn's first incarnation—the one from Batman: The Animated Series—is her best, especially in terms of design, which he uses as a basis for his new take on Quinn. He finds the original design so good that he deviates very little when creating his own.
  • Rule of Three: Crafty introduces each of the three Gotham lady villains the same way. But when he gets to Catwoman, he scraps the sentence and moves on.
Crafty: Gotham City... You may never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. Except maybe Walmart, but that's not the point. Here, in Gotham, you'll find it home to some of the most iconic villains of the caped crusader himself!
[A picture of the first villainess appears.]
Crafty: Harley Quinn. I knew she was trouble the moment I looked at her. But she was down to clown, and I couldn't help but turn my frown upside-down.
[A picture of the second villainess appears.]
Crafty: Poison Ivy. I knew she was trouble the moment I looked at her. If looks could kill, then she's an entire container of weed killer.
[A picture of the third villainess appears.]
Crafty: Catwoman. I knew she was—you get the idea. I like cats and all, but no amount of cute YouTube videos will save you if Halle Berry gets anywhere near her wardrobe.

Top Ten Tub E14: "Original Characters R3"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tub_22.jpg
Air Date: 6/8/2021

Having returned to Original Crafty Characters in "Crafty Idol," Messi and Crafty decide to revisit original characters from abroad once again.

This episode's list contains the following:

  • 10. Feenie
  • 9. Indica, by Meltyvixen
  • 8. Devinquiglyart
  • 7. Mikotonui
  • 6. Dunkehr, by Fabiofontes
  • 5. Valvari Umbra, by Hitennorironi
  • 4. DarkSilvania
  • 3. Marie, by Justzaz
  • 2. Grotto_Esk
  • 1. Bokcutter

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Continuity Nod: Referencing "Gotham Girls Night," when Crafty recounts his encounter with Valvari Umbra, he says "I knew she was trouble the moment I looked at her."
  • Film Noir: Reviewing the #5 spot, the attractive vampire Valvari Umbra, Crafty loses himself in a black and white noir-style fantasy where Valvari seduces him into getting her on the top ten...which is broken when Messi takes control of the spray bottle from earlier.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Crafty admits to being a teratophile after the #2 Character, a plump, seemingly sweet woman with "big mom energy" is revealed to have an alternate form in the shape of a plant monster with More Teeth Than The Osmonds.
  • Playing with Fire: The #10 character, a scientist girl with a fire motif, inspires Crafty and Messi to play with fire themselves. Unfortunately, they wind up behind bars, with Crafty remarking that they're "not allowed in Australia anymore."
  • Who's on First?: The hosts have a bit of trouble with how to say 'Dunkher', the name of the #6 entry, a honey badger warrior, so much so that Dunkher himself becomes peeved at the ensuing shenanigans.

Main Show E81: "Fly Me to the Sailor Moon"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/81.jpeg
Air Date: 6/18/2021

Crafty doesn't show up to start the episode right away, since he's afraid of getting made fun of for discussing Sailor Moon. So Nurse decides to push him in the right direction... by retrieving the Super Crown and turning him into Craftette.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Chekhov's Gun: Crafty's Craftette form—which came into being thanks to Super Mario Brothers' Super Crown—was introduced back in "Here We Go" as a mere gag. For this episode, Crafty's female alter ego allows him to get in touch with his feminine side directly, helping him discuss Sailor Moon more comfortably.
  • Innocent Innuendo: After the art is completed, Craftette wants to return to being Crafty. Unfortunately, neither she nor Nurse can remove the Super Crown. What follows is a sequence of Nurse wailing on Craftette to get the crown removed, and the dialogue between them is extremely suggestive.
[The camera is zoomed in to focus on the door to the lab, where Messi peeks in to see what the commotion is all about. She looks turned on.]
Craftette: Come on, Nurse! Put your back into it and pound my face already!
[Nurse obliges, and Messi's face lights up in recognition upon realizing what's going on.]
Craftette: OWW!! Sodding... Bumblehot... This isn't working.
[The camera cuts to focus on Messi, slowly backing away from the door. She is accompanied by the other cohosts. Pepper and Crystelle look confused, while Stylene looks bored out of her mind, reading a magazine.]
    Craftette: Try another position.
Nurse: Okay! Just one more! Maybe if I do it from behind!
    Craftette: Nurse, no!!
[There's a crash and the sound of some clucking chickens. By this point, almost every cohost leaves the scene in embarrassment... except for Messi, whose mind is running wild with the dialogue she's hearing. The instant she leaves the screen, Stylene returns to drag Messi away.]
  • Take That!: While discussing the enforced gender divide regarding childrens' media, Craftette admits that none of the cartoons in her youth were the prettiest to look at compared to Sailor Moon. As she says this, a frame from Angela Anaconda—a show infamous for its off-putting art style—briefly slides into view.

Questionable Qloset E8: "ENDGAME SPOILER!"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/qloset_17.jpg
Air Date: 6/15/2021

Feeling much better since "Migraine Over Matter," Crystelle is ready to answer some more questions—even ones that spoil Dr. Crafty's ending.

This episode's questions for Crystelle are revealed on the following three cards:

  1. The Star (Crystelle): "Do you have any friends in the world of fortune telling or clairvoyance that you talk to beyond the inhabitants of Crafty's castle?"
  2. The Hierophant (Crafty's Parents): "Does Crafty still keep in touch with his parents? Are they still on good terms? I'm surprised we haven't heard much about them in the present."
  3. The Lovers (Young Crafty & Sasha): "Who do you think will get with Crafty first? Sasha or Nurse?"

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Cards of Power: For this episode, Crystelle draws the Star (Herself), the Hierophant (Crafty's parents), and the Lovers (Crafty and Sasha back when they were a couple). This episode marks the Lovers' debut. The month this episode takes place in is meant to be a cooldown period between the more plot-heavy months; thus, the show refuses to directly answer the Lovers' immensely plot-heavy question.
  • Good Parents: One question asks if Crafty still keeps in touch with his parents, and Crystelle is happy to report that he does. They call him up after each episode airs to catch up with their son. They're understandably concerned over the wacky shenanigans Crafty experiences throughout the show; Crystelle recalls one phone call where they brought up Crafty's tenuous relationship with Jedah.
Crafty: No, mother. I was not making a deal with the devil. I was making a deal with a video game character, who happens to be a demon, and is a lawyer... What do you mean that's worse?
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: The final question of the episode asks about what will become of Crafty's love life by the end of the series. Crystelle can't believe that she's being asked to spoil a huge plot point in the series, but, under obligation to do so under her own rules, she begins answering the question anyways. Thankfully, a surprise interruption from Pig saves this big spoiler for another day.

Main Show E82: "Old Project, New Look!"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/82.jpeg
Air Date: 6/25/2021

To his chagrin and Nurse's delight, Crafty's final set of commissions for the month has him revisit his old Green Detective project. This time, he's tasked with redesigning the project's main cast to get them up to speed with his current character design skills.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Anger Born of Worry: When Nurse discovers Crafty trying to drink his sorrows about his old project away, she rather belligerently tries to prevent him from drinking too much. She first smashes two of his wine bottles with rocks, then later actively wrestles an unexpected third bottle out of his hands.
Crafty: So... as you can see... Ugh, Nurse, can you say it? I just can't.
Nurse: Fine... So, as you can see, today we have once again been commissioned by ArmouredKabuto to draw the Green Detective cast, which is the Doctor's old university thesis project!
    [Crafty bawls aloud.]
Nurse: Crafty... is still coming to terms with it. But the good news is that the client is allowing us to redesign the cast to better reflect our current skill levels, not unlike how we did in our Fiona Frightening episodes!
Crafty: Oh. Well, why didn't you say so in the first place?
[To Nurse's dismay, Crafty draws a third wine bottle, after she had presumably destroyed all that he had.]
    Crafty: This calls for celebration!
Nurse: ... I thought you said we were out of those!
Crafty: Oh, don't be so... winey, Nurse!
[A Rimshot plays as Nurse snarls at Crafty]
Nurse: I'm going to crush you like a grape!
[Crafty takes off with Nurse in hot pursuit.]
Crafty: Ahh! Nurse, no! I'll be good!
[The art footage continues without their input for a few seconds before they return. Nurse now has the wine bottle with her.]
    Nurse: Now, where were we.
Crafty: [slyly] Jeez, Nurse. I didn't realize you had such a drinking problem! Really need to get that checked out.
    Nurse: [incredulously] ... Oh, hush.
[Nurse abruptly tosses the wine bottle behind her, upon which it shatters.]
    Crafty: Nooo! Cynthia!!
    Nurse: ... Cynthia?
Crafty: That was her name? 'Cynthia?'
Nurse: ... Rest in peace, Cynthia... Now, back to the show!
Crafty: Very well! I will mourn my loss in private!
  • Ironic Echo: After the art is complete and Nurse and Crafty say their farewells until next month, there is a cut to Mindstein's lair. She activates the now-completed robotic Crafty foreshadowed back in "Player Select." As the robot comes out of its containment, it repeats Crafty's catchphrase—only, he expresses it as a threat against the real Crafty's life, instead of as a call to get creative.
    Metal Crafty: LET'S. GET. CRAFTY.
  • Sequel Episode: This episode is a sequel to "Charablanca" from Season 3. Once again, someone orders a piece from Crafty involving characters from his old Green Detective project. And like last time, Nurse helps Crafty confront—and hopefully reverse—his shame over the project.

Shake-Up Salon E2: "Jupiter? I Hardly Know Her!"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/salon.jpg
Air Date: 6/22/2021

Stylene is absolutely giddy; today, she and Crafty are enhancing a Sailor Moon character's design, and she's eager to gush about one of her favorite characters from a childhood favorite anime series.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Continuity Nod: Crafty compares his poor opinion on Dragon Ball Z to his opinion on Sailor Moon. In fact, much of his argument lines up quite well with the points he brought up about DBZ in "Dragon! Dragon! Mock the Dragon!"
  • Can't Take Criticism: Crafty brings up how his outlook on Sailor Moon soured much as it did with Dragon Ball Z. Stylene is about ready to shank him for daring to criticize one of her favorite series... but she relents and agrees with Crafty once he elaborates.
  • Fangirl: Stylene is way more enthusiastic about her job than she was in the last month—she gets to talk about a character from one of her favorite anime series.
Stylene: Honestly, Doc, I'm not sure how much we can do here. After all, you can't improve perfection!
Crafty: Be that as it may, the patrons have voted. And this time we're giving a redesign to Sailor Jupiter!
Stylene: Ahhh! First comes lightning, then comes the thundah!
    Crafty: Mind reining it in?
    Stylene: Rrrrgh, fine, Doc.
