After Roger insults Doug's shoes, Doug must decide between getting the new "Sky Davis" brand, or sticking with his originals. An unorthodox source helps him make a decision.

Tropes:

  • All Women Love Shoes: A variation. After Roger makes fun of his old sneakers, Doug begins to realize how much the girls in his school seem to like guys who wear cool shoes all of a sudden.
  • Be Yourself: Sky Davis helps Doug learn that you should always be yourself, because there’s going to be people who like and appreciate you just the way you are.
  • Circling Birdies: Stars spin around Doug’s head when the basketball bounces off the hoop and hits him in the head after Roger distracts him by making fun of his shoes.
    • It happens to him again later when Mr. Dink is trying to throw his old shoes in the trash and misses, hitting Doug in the head.
  • Metaphorgotten: Doug struggles with coming up with an ending line for his journal entry at the end of the episode.
Doug: Sometime you gotta put your foot where your mouth is…nah. A shoe in the hand…no. I should walk a mile in your moccasins…hmmm. Never kick a good shoe while it’s down! Yeah!
  • Shamed by a Mob: One of Doug’s Imagine Spots in this episode involves a crowd gathering around him, laughing and pointing at his “lame” sneakers.
  • Shout-Out: Sky Davis’ Air Jets shoes are clearly a reference to Michael Jordan’s Air Jordans.
  • Tricked-Out Shoes: Mr. Dink buys new athletic shoes that are “aerodynamically controlled and computerized” and that give the wearer motivation by playing a recording that says “Move it, fatso!”.
  • Wastebasket Ball: Doug and Porkchop play a game of this with crumpled balls of paper from his journal at the end of the episode.
  • Your Television Hates You: While flipping through the channels on TV, everything he sees reminds Doug that he needs to buy new, cooler shoes.
Doug: The whole world was talking about shoes!

When Doug sees Roger harassing Patti to help him with his book report, Doug imagines himself as Quailman, saving her from his pestering.

Tropes:

  • Cutting Back to Reality: In his daydream, Doug as Quailman is defeating Klotzilla who yells “Alright, alright!”. The camera then cuts to Mr. Bone coming to break up the fight saying the exact same lines.
  • Detention Episode: Roger, Patti, Doug and Skeeter all end up serving detention together: the former two for fighting in class, the latter for continuing to talk immediately afterwards.
  • Don't Try This at Home: Doug gives this warning to the audience after he uses his “Quail Eyes” on Klotzilla.
  • "King Kong" Climb: In Doug’s Imagine Spot, a monstrous Klotzilla takes Patti in one of his giant hands and scales a building with her.
  • Notzilla: Doug imagines Roger as a giant lizard named Klotzilla, though he acts more like King Kong.
  • Super-Powered Alter Ego: This episode revolves around Doug imagining himself as his imaginary superhero alter ego, Quailman, so he can save Patti from Roger.
  • Wimp Fight: After Doug accidentally hits Roger in the nose, the latter calls for a fight outside after detention. Doug clearly doesn’t want to fight and uses his Quailman powers to avoid it. Surprisingly, Roger also doesn’t even attempt to throw a punch.
  • You Need a Breath Mint: Patti says this when she’s in Klotzilla’s grasp and throws a roll of mints into his open mouth.
