Recap / Doom Patrol 2019 S 3 E 02 Vacay Patrol

Go To

As everyone struggles to take the next steps in their lives, Rita Farr decides to take the team to a vacation resort to recuperate and relax. Meanwhile, a long-forgotten ally of the Brotherhood of Evil has been dispatched to destroy Niles's agents for good.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Aerith and Bob: Gargaux, and his sidekick (also an alien), Samuelson.
  • Central Theme: People who refuse to seek help or progress as a person, trapping themselves in their personal ruts.
  • Dance Party Ending: Subverted. It seems the episode will conclude with the team dancing together to Alphaville's "Forever Young", but then Samuelson crashes the party with a giant laser cannon.
  • Death Equals Redemption: Discussed. Vic is willing to forgive Niles after his death, while Cliff considers their lives better off without the Chief. Rita and Jane are clearly more conflicted about the issue and find themselves missing him more than they want to admit.
  • Downer Ending: The episode ends with Samuelson killing the entire main cast.
  • Foil: Garguax and Samuelson act as this to the Doom Patrol's issues of heroism. Like most of the Doom Patrol, Garguax has come to realize that the fight of good vs. evil is largely pointless and serves no higher cause. Meanwhile, Samuelson and Cyborg still believe in the fight and want to push their respective partners into a brawl for the sake of "duty."
  • In My Language, That Sounds Like...: Samuelson claims that in his language "Cyborg" means "Fish-Fucker."
  • Insult to Rocks: After Jane describes Niles as a "rat bastard", Rita quips that it was a cruel thing to say about rats.
  • Jumped at the Call: Subverted. Rita's failure to do this after a season of trying to reinvent herself as a superhero weighs heavily on her and spawns the impulse decision to go on vacation.
  • Refusal of the Call: Vic's insistence on trying to be a superhero team (because to his mind, that's what people with superpowers just do) reaches its breaking point with the others as Jane furiously points out that none of them want to be superheroes.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Kay's other personalities have clearly learned their lesson from the aftermath of "Miranda." They're now openly helpful to both Jane and the rest of the team, compared to their aloof disgust for the Patrol before now.
