Recap / Doctor Who TAG E05 "The Gunpowder Plot"

Go To

The one where we finally see the Sontarans and Rutans in battle against one another.

Written by Phil Ford.

The fifth adventure game, and the only installment of the "second series", set around series 6.

A Rutan ship has collided with the TARDIS. The TARDIS lands centuries later London at the time of Guy Fawkes, 5 November 1605, where temporal lesions from the proximity of the two ships have started appearing around London. Meanwhile, a Rutan, awakened from stasis, is looking for apocalypse weapons attuned to the DNA of the entire Sontaran race. She intends to assist the gunpowder plotters in blowing up Parliament to help launch her ship.

Tropes:

  • Bond One-Liner: Rory says one, whenever he uses his stun weapon on the Rutans.
  • Chekhov's Gun: As usual for the Adventure Games, a lot of items you pick up can be this. One example is how the Story begins with the Doctor, Amy & Rory picking up some Chinese Food. Amy later uses the Prawn Crackers to lure rats to a guard she needs to sneak by.
  • Continuity Nod: The Laser Screwdriver is still attached to the Tardis Console, after Amy placed it there in a previous Adventure Game Episode; TARDIS.
  • Easter Egg: When you approach items of interest, they may give you a fact about said item. On some occasions, doing this shall cause a Silent to appear. Talk to the Silent, and they shall give you a description of the item in the Silent's words.
  • Edutainment Show: This Episode seems more designed to educate the players about the Gunpowder Plot, as well as the time period it is set in, than any of the previous installments.
  • Exact Words: The Doctor tells Guy Fawkes that people will remember him. He does not say it's not in the way Fawkes is thinking.
  • Historical Domain Character: Guy Fawkes
  • Invisible Writing: The Doctor is able to discover the location of the plotters' next meeting by using the fireplace in the TARDIS drawing room to heat the paper, revealing the invisible ink.
  • Suffer the Slings: Rory uses one, in order to battle the Sontarans.
  • Take a Third Option: Both the Sontarans and Rutans are after two apocalypse weapons attuned to the DNA of the targets. The Doctor reprograms the devices, mixes them up and gives one each to the Sontarans and Rutans. As a result, neither side can use the weapon, as there's no way to know if they're setting off the weapon programmed to kill their own race.
