- Early-Bird Cameo: The Doctor enters the story right at the end of part 1, which was published days before his first episode was to go out on TV.
- Emotion Eater: The Umbra consume guilt and regret.
- Gone Horribly Right: The alien who created the Umbra made them as a fabric to drain negative feelings. However they became intelligent and wiped out his race.
- Sealed Evil in a Can: The Umbra were imprisoned in the Sun.
- Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: Rudy Zoom is too narcissistic and happy for the Umbra to feed on him.
