Recap / Disenchantment S 5 E 9 Darkness Falls

Go To

As Bean mourns the loss of Mora, Elfo, Luci and Mop Girl attempt to stop Dagmar's plans on their own.

Tropes:

  • Achilles in His Tent: Bean spends most of the episode inconsolable about Mora's death.
  • And Then What?: Satan's "The Reason You Suck" Speech to Dagmar emphasizes this, pointing out that she'll be unhappy and alone even if she wins and asking her what the point of it all is. She brushes it off.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Satan lists the worst things mankind has inflicted on themselves, which also includes dating apps and gummi bears.
  • Back from the Dead: Pendergast, whose head has been in a jar in Sorcerio's study, is brought back to life when Sorcerio refills the jar with magic-infused water.
  • Brick Joke: Satan mentions he once fought against God, and God's brother.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Bean tells Dagmar that she owes her nothing.
  • The Cavalry Arrives Late: The ogres only show up after the battle's over, though once they learn nearly everyone else is dead Junior admits they're not so sorry.
  • Equippable Ally: Mop Girl uses Luci as a weapon again to shoot fireballs at Dagmar.
  • Foreshadowing: Satan's "The Reason You Suck" Speech to Dagmar foreshadows the Ironic Hell that he puts her in at the end of the series - alone with someone she hates.
  • Gosh Darn It to Heck!: Even irritated at the Trogs for their behavior, all Alva can muster is a mildly put-out "gosh darn it".
  • Human Shield: Dagmar uses two of her Goons to shield herself against Luci's fireballs.
  • Internal Reveal: Bean only learns toward the end of the episode that Mop Girl is half-elf.
  • I Reject Your Reality: Freckles insists he's become a real boy, even though Bean points out he's still very obviously a puppet. Freckles doesn't believe her until he sees he's still got newspapers for brains.
  • Killed Off for Real: Luci's body is thrown in a lava pit by Dagmar, and God tells him because of that there'll be no backsies this time.
  • Kill the God: Jerry throws a brick at God's head in fury at His constant callous behavior... which shatters God's head.
  • The Magic Comes Back: Magic leaks into the groundwater of Dreamland.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Dagmar suddenly displays the ability to generate illusions of herself in her fight with Mop Girl and Elfo.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Jerry manages to break the universe, simply with a well-thrown brick.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Satan delivers one of these to Dagmar, confronting her with And Then What? and telling her she'll be alone and unhappy even if she wins.
  • Schmuck Bait:
    • Rulo tries throwing his sceptre at Shocko for annoying him, but it falls short. He asks Shocko to take a step forward, and when he does hits him for real, despite Blabbo's warning.
    • Standing in the throne room, Freckles asks Bean to take a step back, so he can activate the trap door. Bean does so, but manages to avoid the door.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: Fed up with Dagmar and outraged by her killing Luci, Satan finally decides to go back to Hell.
  • Weak-Willed: Where Satan's hypnotic powers had difficulty with Bean and Lucy, he instantly manages to enthral the ogres and Pops.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Despite the mermaids being present and mostly still alive at the end of the last episode, they vanish without any comment.
