Recap / Dinosaurs S 01 E 04 High Noon

Go To

After Fran meets a nice dinosaur who helps her with her groceries, Earl gets a letter from his lawyers, challenging him to a fight to the death over being married to Fran, and Earl then learns that this guy is a giant. The only legal way out is to leave the family, which Earl initially considers and Fran suggests just so he'll be alive and safe, but after talking with the kids, Earl decides the family is too important and trains for the fight. When Gary, the dinosaur in question, shows up, he's taller than the house, but Fran angrily chews him out and says she is not interested in him, and after seeing the kids, Gary decides he's not ready to settle down.

Includes exampels of

  • Artistic License – Paleontology: Gary is described as a Dilophosaurus, which was a relatively small dinosaur at about 23 feet long. Both the Megalosaurus and the T. rex were much larger, despite being shown here as the size of hamsters by comparison.
  • David vs. Goliath: Earl is challenged by Gary, who is a 50-foot-tall dinosaur. When Fran describes him, she says that she's not entirely sure of his size because the clouds were covering his face.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: A commercial advertises growing horns on one head, spoofing commercials for curing baldness.
  • Exact Words: Roy tells Earl there is an escape clause - he just has to escape.
  • Gilligan Cut: Earl made it loud and clear to his family that he is not afraid to fight Gary alone, and then at work, he organizes a plan to fight Gary with the aid of his friends.
  • Graceful Loser: Gary fits this trope to the full extent because with Fran standing up for Earl and telling him off about how Earl is the only male she'll ever love, Gary withdrew his challenge against Earl and let him and Fran stay together. He was impressed that Earl's been married to Fran for 19 years, saying he's made of steel.
  • The Faceless: When Gary comes to challenge Earl, all that can be seen is his enormous foot. This is actually lampshaded by the Baby.
    "Where's the rest of him?"
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: Earl enters the kitchen with "morning, family... and Ethyl."
  • Training Montage: Earl goes through one.
