Dexter's Laboratory (Changes) contains examples of:

  • Animation Bump: Being the pilot episode, "Changes" has more fluid animation than the rest of the series.
  • Animorphism: Dexter's newest invention turns anyone into an animal.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Here, Dexter's room simply transitions into the laboratory, visible to any who would enter the room. In all other episodes, the lab is hidden and only accessible through a secret entrance.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Dee Dee delights in playing in Dexter's laboratory, yet she becomes livid when she discovers one of her dolls in an operation table.
Dee Dee: I can't believe you would go into my room, take one of my dolls, and put her in one of your stinky, slimy machines!
  • Not Quite Back to Normal: At the end, it appears that Dexter and Dee Dee are back to normal, but when they speak it's revealed that they actually turned into each other.
  • Written Sound Effect:
    • When Dee Dee startles Dexter with a loud "HI!", the word appears in the background.
    • Every zap of the transformation ray is accompanied by the word "KZZT".
