Tropes in this episode

  • Code Name: Martin is given the code name Kolibri.
  • Fish out of Water: Martin in the West, especially in the scene where he first finds himself in a western supermarket and is absolutely stunned by the amount of food, especially bananas, which East Germany famously didn't have, that is sold there.
  • Implied Death Threat: Lenora implies that if Martin doesn't continue the spy mission his mother Ingrid will not get the medicine she needs. Martin is horrified because Lenora is Ingrid's sister, but Lenora states that there is so much more in the balance than just one life.
  • Kill and Replace: The real Moritz Stamm is quietly murdered so that Martin can take his place.
  • Meet Cute: Of the murderous variant. Poor real Moritz Stamm...
  • Mole in Charge: Lieutenant Colonel Karl Kramer is rather high ranking and a HVA spy.
  • New Meat: Martin among the experienced spies such as Tischbier and Kramer. He promptly screws up multiple times, such as fumbling the handover of the photographs of the American plans and being overheard calling his girlfriend in the East.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: Schweppenstette drugs Martin and has him brought to the West when Martin refuses the assignment as spy. Later, Martin himself drugs Edel's sister-in-law Renate to make her forget overhearing him calling his girlfriend.
  • Training Montage: Martin gets one with Tischbier when he arrives in the West.
